I'm going to be in the process of setting my kennels up better this spring/summer and would like suggestions on evergreens. If some of you don't know already we are on 5 acres in Michigan and have 1 nasty neighbor (seriously nasty) and we would like to plant some thick wide evergreens to eliminate the barking (which there isn't much, honestly), and from the neighbor seeing my dog's. I have already had problems with his girlfriends 4 year old pointing a rifle at 1 of my dog's Arro, so this should some what describe what kind of nasty neighbor I have, and this is only a little portion of what they have done to me and my dog's. I would move but obviously being in Michigan should say it all. I was told about White Pine and was wondering if anyone has used this? I would also like to hear if anyone has any suggestions on other types of evergreens that would work in the Michigan weather and what I'm looking for. Any help is appreciated :-)
I think I would skip the trees and go for an electrified fence and razor wire!
Sorry, but I really stink at horticulture so no good suggestions for you there.
lol!!! I don't have a problem with them getting on my property as I have a privacy fence up, just don't want them to see my dog's and I heard evergreens block noise as well. I would LOVE to electrify them lol!!!!
I would make a list of all the local nurseries and take notes on their recommendations. Then I would consult with an arborist.
You want to get it right because it is an investment of time and money. Trees don't happen overnight and they aren't free.
I live in a very mild climate and I would use Italian Cypress. They grow really fast and really tall and thick. They can be used as a green fence they are so thick. Yet, they do not grow that wide.
Try googling something like this - green fence cold climate.
Good luck,
Michele
I'll have to find the story about the woman shooting a 357 at her nieghbors dog and killing her nieghbors daughter.
The woman is doing real time in prison now and I hope she is not popular there.
Kelly,
Find a local arborist or green house because there are several evergreen shrubs and trees you could use, something that does well in your area.
White pine would not do what your looking for.
Next time your nieghbor is doing something stupid catch it on tape and consider a formal complaint.
And a wooden privacy fence might be cheaper than landscaping, talk to a nursery, get an estimate for both.
P.S.
A higher privacy fence...:)
Ok, here's my suggestion, Use a variety of Spruces and Firs on the neighbor's side. Buy a few as large as you can afford, and fill in the rest with younger trees. They will be gone (neighbors view in 5 years, and they keep disappearing even more after that. I planted some gorgeous columnar purple beech trees in front of blue, white, and Serbian spruces and it makes a nice constrast. Also there are specimen Cedars that you can use for drama. I like the Spruces on the neighbors side, because while slower growing than the White Pine, has sharp unfriendly needles. This if allowed, and planted in a staggered double row, creates a larger animal and people proof divider, yet with minimal care you have manageable compact growth.
Don't bother with Arborvitae, it just becomes deer food. Best mix up some varieties so if there is a plant disease disaster you are never treeless.
Hope this helps.
Kelly, I wouldnt go with trees. They are alot of work and then some and I doubt they will have much effect on barking. Look into another solution other than trees, as said above they do take time to grow to any considerable height and width. VB

Thanks guy's!!! I do plan on going to some nursery's around here but wanted to try to get some suggestions from here as well. I was told that White Pine grows fast and would be good, but I guess that wasn't good advice. I do have a 6 foot privacy fence up but 1 of my dog's right now is on a hill where he is visible and is the one that the 4 year old pointed his rifle to!!! This nasty neighbor of mine is always caling animal control up too. Animal control has come out and seen all of my dog's, but do not come out anymore. I think they now know the guy is whacked!!! So I thought that planting evergreens would do the job at least till I can move hopefully on more land without neighbors :-) I want to block them from seeing or even hearing them bark.
Two Moons, this fence already ran me $8,000 and I'm not a rich person. I don't think they can go higher than 6 feet either, but could be wrong on that. I did get some picture's yesterday of the 4 year old carrying the rifle, but I didn't get the picture when he actually planted his feet and pointed it at my dog Arro. I was too much in shock and ran outside. The kid then took off running calling for his mommy. I didn't do anything but run outside. The last thing that I want to have happen is him or my neighbor actually killing one of my dog's, so I thought the best way to block them from seeing my dog's and hearing them is evergreens.
Leylandii (sp?)... it causes problems in the UK because it grown so high and so fast... but it could be just the ticket for you!
