Hi all, how can I tell if my showling GSD female is splitting seasons? She's 10 months old. At 4 months, she spot-bled for a day (I don't know if she was swollen or not). At 8 months (this past December), she went into a normal heat, bleeding for about 10 days. However, her vulva is STILL swollen (this is 8 weeks after she started bleeding; over 6 weeks after the last day I noticed bleeding). It looks like she's still in heat, minus the bleeding, and the lack of "extra attention" from males.

If she is splitting, is there anything bad about that? Perhaps just having trouble knowing when to mate her when she's older? I know females get loose in the hips (for example) and blow their coats before/during seasons; will she be like twice as often as a normal, 2-heat-per-year female? Thanks everyone :)

I've got a friend who has a female that comes into heat every 4 months.  then I also knew someone who had a female who would come in for 2 weeks, then come back in 3-4 weeks after that.

is this the same female with eating issue's? you might want to consider having her thyroid levels and hormones level checked by a vet.  just to make sure there's no problems

yep, same female who won't eat. She had problems before, months ago, when she was on Eukaneuba large breed puppy (constant loose stools), as soon as she went back to Royal Canin she was fine again, and eating fine.

Just curiuos, if there was a thyroid/hormone problem, A) are there other signs and symptoms I should take note of?
B) why the sudden "decision" to not eat like this, when she was doing perfectly fine before? Perhaps things change at a certain age?

Maybe she'll be going into heat again soon... boo haha

the ones who are picky eaters are always a pain.  I've had a few, but would never keep pups out of them,  I just don't like a picky eater.  the dogs I have now will eat pretty much anything put in front of them. now they do have a skinny phase at around 10 -12 months, but they don't fail to eat.

maybe she just likes RC.  have you put her back on it and she is still giving you problems?

how does her coat look? poor coat can indicate thyroid issue's, but so can a poor diet.  I'd just get a blood panel done on her to be safe.  I'd check on tick disease, hormone levels.

and it could just be she is a picky eater and nothing else is wrong with her.  but I would run tests for peace of mind.

I've got a bitch who has seasons every 4 months and she is also a very fussy eater.  However we've found a way to get her to eat without a problem - all we have to do is soak the food!

Definitely do a work-up.
Noodle WAS a picky eater. Turned out she had a low grade infection that didn't present with any clear symptoms, found during testing. A couple of weeks of treatment and she eats like a pig now, completely different dog. I have another female who didn't eat when she got here. We treated her with Flagyl. It took three seperate courses but she's doing great now, actually getting a little too  fat so I have to cut her back on the food.

Almost every one of my females has had split heats this last year for some reason, even the ones not living here, and quite a few others I know of. don't know why. Maybe its the weather changing so drastically lately?

Shelley,

I have one female and she had split heats all last year. Friends of mine, one with a Rott, had the same thing happen to them. We could not find anything that was the same with them except for location (weather) and the food they ate. We fed The Taste of the Wild. Sadie (my pup) finally stop by herself, where the Rott, continued to have split heats until they changed her food. Then she started up again.

I don't know about if it could be the weather but I am sure happy that it just wasn't mine. =)
