We have started taking our 11 week GSD out every time he starts squealing, and we have given him access to his water only right before bathroom breaks. Our schedule had him going out every hour (except when he is crated), but now because of his squealing, we are going out every 20 minutes....AND....he is still dribbling a couple times a day in the house...usually right after he comes back in, or in between the potty breaks. He was doing so well about 1 1/2 weeks ago...and now he is making little mistakes left and right. The pees in the house are little bitty dribbles...and he is peeing full amounts outside. What am I doing wrong? Why is he squealing all the time and why is he peeing all the time (we have turned the thermostat down so that it is freezing in here...to see if he was hot and if that was why he always wants to go to the tiled kitchen...didn't work)? He stays on a leash with us at ALL times when he is in the house...unless he is eating or in his crate. Here is his schedule (without the 20 minute breaks in between...note that my wife teaches piano during the afternoons...that is why the schedule can be a little odd)...

Sounds like submissive urination not housbreaing issue.

by hodie on 14 February 2009 - 23:02

This is NOT about submissive urination, it is about the schedule.

He should go out IMMEDIATELY upon waking and BEFORE he eats. He should have access to water until about 4-5 in the evening and then no more. He should be taken out every hour during waking hours until he pees and praised when he does pee.

If he is sleeping, he should be crated and immediately picked up and taken out when he cries and is telling you he needs out. He should go out for  20 minutes to 1/2 hour prior going to bed at night and you may have to take him out once during the night until he is older.

Secondly, I would strongly consider taking him to the vet for a check to make sure he does not have a urinary tract infection. If he does, he does what he needs to do and is developing bad habits.

I agree with Kovey,

he seems to be going out when he wakes in the morning, and they said he is peeing alot outside,

I have had 2 females that had gone through submissive urination, he is fine, I always recommend not

giving water after 7pm.

If your pup squealing in his crate, take a coffee can with about 20 quarters in it and shake it and say no,
it takes his mind off of squealing and focuses on the noisey can, I had a pup probably 5 yrs back I had to
do that, haven't had them do that lately, it may be cause I figured if I was to feed them in the crate everytime
theywould like staying in it, it would be more like home to them.

The thing about submissive urination is, when he comes back in the house, DON'T LOOK AT HIM, DON'T
PET HIM ON THE TOP OF HIS HEAD, (It kinda sets it off)

Then after he's been in the house awhile, scratch his belly while he's standing and say only once "Good Boy"
Then pay no attention and walk away....

It has worked for me in the past.

Good luck!

"The pees in the house are little bitty dribbles...and he is peeing full amounts outside. What am I doing wrong? Why is he squealing all the time and why is he peeing all the time"

Have you taken him to your vet to rule out a UTI?
That could explaine the "dribbling" and maybe some of the squealing...
Or if you let him out of his crate when he makes noise you may have conditioned him to whine more.... he has learned that if he whines and you come and let him out or give him attention....(rewarding bad behavior) try to only let him out when he is quiet..... But I would persnally have him checked by your vet to rule out a UTI....
Good Luck

The whining is when he is sitting with us in the den...not when he gets out of the crate or when he is in the crate...he also sleeps through the night without having to use the bathroom...and we ALWAYS take him out as soon as he wakes up and as soon as he gets out of the crate...he is on medicine for coccidia and the peeing problem started when he started taking the medicine...what frustrates me is that we could have just taken him out to pee (and he pees) and then we take him inside and as soon as we sit down he pees.

Coccidia medicine is to be given with plenty of water avalable . Could that be part of the problem ?

by jrs1984 on 15 February 2009 - 12:02

We try to give him plenty of water...but I have wondered if the medicine is the culprit

I am in full agreement with hodie, your pup is only 11 wks. Lots of praise outside, sometime even treats on recall after potty. Try not to stress out over this, we did not call our puppy piddle butt for nothing, I did not want this to be a stressful situation for her either. Please see your vet for a check up. I am sure everything is fine, this may take up to six month before the bladder can tone up. Keep up the good work and try to sleep when the puppy is sleeping, being sleep deprived is not going to help your puppy either.
Always, C.
