On a more serious note! Is 14 months a suitable time to have pics done for a definative evaluation on hips and elbows?

In UK it can be done any time from 12 months old.

I think I would wait for 24 mths so not to do it twice,as I worry that they want to put the dog to sleep, each time it is a risk.

Am I to assume that x-rays at 14 months will not be suffecient for a permanant evaluation of hips?

OFA certification requires you wait till 24 months.  USA will send x-rays to the SV anytime after 12 months.    The llater will have all the paperwork together when you earn the Sch 1 and go for a kkl rating.  A lot depends on how quickly you want all of the pieces in place.  I waited till  ~18 months for my oldest female on her hips, elbows were not required at that time.    Still trying to find out what changes in bone structure they are looking for, shoulders and shoulder dyplasia seem to be more prominante as issues with GSDs.

It also does not hurt to have the hips shot at latter stages of life to make sure they are still good.

Depends on what country. You can get an "a" stamp at 12mos. But in the US, OFA wants 24mos for certification.
