Hello there.
I might get a GSD puppy this summer, the bitch will come in heat in the end of february and the chosen one is a police dog - a beautiful one I might add.

So my question is - never owned a puppy before I'd like to know what I should look for/at in the puppy.

I'm not experienced in owning dogs, I own one dog now a labrador ....

I want a dog that can herd (in the future) and I don't know what to look for regarding different things ; prey drive, how curious the dog is and so forth ???

I hope you can guide me towards my right dog, I'm more of a male girl than a bitch girl hehe .

But if the girl takes my breath away I'll offcourse pick her.

I'm a wee bit scared that I might choose a dull dog or ad dog that is too much for me.

So fire away or at least if you would show me some links

Peace out

sorry just went to the link to hauspharao's site and under the temperament link you'll find the same article i just posted.  i would have thought it would be a big help, not sure why you said that site didn't help.  since it's not helpful i would have to i agree with snaiper69 - search the database maybe you will find what you are looking for  - and i would add talk to your breeder.   - best of luck

Go to some of the local schutzhund clubs and ask what people  look for in a puppy to train and work.  There are temperament tests that some breeders use at 7 weeks to determine which puppies go to working homes, police, pet homes, etc.   Talk to a few of the breeders who use these tests, particularly the ones that have a  lot of experience, and ask them what they would look for.

i have a great herding female, but i must say that you did not see it till after she was a year.
but not all shep. have the right drive for herding.
some have two much or too little,.
you need to find parents that are herders , thats your best bet,

Life dosen't suck when you're as sweet as I am :)

I found it under temperament on the haus Pharao site !

I thank you all for your interest.

Offcourse I wont know the herding, I just don't know what to look for in the early stages, puppies vary so much !

My breeder is inexperienced but I chose this litter because it's a litter that appeals to me as a pet dog.

There isn't any schutzhund club in my country and no breeders that breed working dogs, it's all show show here.

Hence me looking to you dear people
