There are automaticly disqualifiyed because ot their color.
I have seen a lot of White dogs and a lot of people advertising White GSD over the years.
What is the real story with White GS ?

Here is an interesting article on White Sheperds working with the Germans as Scout Snipers in WWII.

There's nothing that's really wrong with White (German/Swiss) Shepherds...mostly just alot of bad press.

Like the rumor that they can't work, the rumor that they can't herd, the rumor that they have health issues, the rumor that they dilute coat color (while many may carry the dominant gene that dilutes the red, it is at a totally seperate loci then the masking gene), the rumor that they are albino (the coat only affects the fur, not the skin, and is called a masking gene.)

Here are my two (they're both young and still in training which is what most of these pics are from...and clearly not mature yet O.o  The female is 21 months, the male is 16 months...though most of these pics are from several months ago)

Nice pics Cate!

My boy Kane was from a White German Shepherd female that was the product of an 11 year old male,
breeding with a young female that the people got probably cause the male was getting up there in age,
so Kane is most likely from an old White GSD bloodline, his dad was AKC reg but his mom was pure
but not reg. I never did track down the owner of his sire, he moved away, I would have loved to see the lines.

He was a great swimmer!!!!

There's nothing wrong with them, they are just different.
They have their own standards and are registered differently now.
I've seen some very nice white dogs.

it's my understanding that the white gsd is to the gsd as the west highland white is to the cairn terrier - basically a separate breed was establish soley based on the color difference.

just out of curiosity what would happen if one were to breed a white with a sable?  would the sable color dominate and no whites be produced unless the sable had a recessive white gene?

The Whites in the United States are all mostly still registered as GSDs...and are thus a member of the breed....those of us gunning for seperation have not yet been able to attain it...neither the AKC or the GSDCA seems to want to accomodate us in our goals fo seperating from the GSD.  They are a seperate breed in the FCI nations.

Yes.

One thing they can do better than any other colour is   HIDE IN THE SNOW.

Sorry but I couldn't help that after seeing the photo posted by Ceph.

Very nice dogs.

thanks cate - this would be the same for a black & tan right?  if you breed a black & tan to a sable the pups would all be sable unless the sable carried black & tan?

Yupyup.  The only difference is that the white coat is the recessive allele at the E locus (which controls the mask on the face as well), and the other coat patterns are at the Agouti Locus, the most dominant of which is sable and the most recessive of which is black.

Thanks dogshome :)
