Hey all, a friend of mine has a bit of a problem. It seems that when she takes dog out to do its business and play that it sometimes has the tendency to eat its own poop. I have never heard of a dog doing this so I was wondering if you guys or gals have run across this problem and what should she do about this?

Thanks...

Many dogs eat their own poop, common knowledge. You'll hear a hundred different reasons why they might do this, I just tell people that maybe, possibly, they like how it tastes! It's as good an answer as any. Just try and clean it up quickly, and make sure the dog is on a really digestable diet. Good poopy luck, Von Leistung

I have seen this happen and have heard numerous explanations. As unappetizing as it sounds, it is not all that uncommon. I have heard of people sprinkling various things on the excrement to make it less appetizing, at least until the dog starts associating the bad taste with eating its own (or another dog's) waste.

I order the dog to "leave it" when he starts going near something like that. If it does not obey the command, take the dog out on a leash. Also, take it to one part of the property (a small, out of the way area) to relieve itself, and keep the play area separate.

This thing might happen in phases. It's best to deal with it quickly and make changes. It is odd how we can at times try to cater to our dogs' palates only to find that they might just as well eat crap. I always laugh when they say a particular food for dog's is "better tasting". So, exactly who do they get to taste it, and then make a comparison to other foods?

My dog never ate poop, then one day at a place where a lot of dogs frequent she came upon one particular pile and like it.
Of course I moved her away from it.  But when I took her back there, when we reached the area that that poop was in she found it and was eating the remnants of it with the snow as it seems other dogs had eaten the rest of it.  I have also seen other dogs go to the same spot and try to eat whatever was left.  I've heard that if a dog is lacking something i.e. vitamins, minerals or whatever then they'll get it from a pile that has it.  How they would know that that pile has it is beyond me!
I've also seen her go to eat poop after she's seen another dog to to a pile and try to comsume it.
Anybody else seen anything like that?

THIS IS WHY I ALWAYS HIT THE DUMPSTER AT MC DONALDS AND BURGER KING. I ALWAYS KEEP MCNUGGETS AND CHICKEN TENDERS IN MY POCKETS. IF MY DOG HAS A BM AND BEGINS TO EAT IT I THROW DOWN SOME TENDERS WITH IT TO ASSURE THE MEAL IS BALANCED. TODAY I FOUND 2 ANGRY WHOPPERS IN THE BK DUMPSTER. IM TALKING YUMMY.

Some dogs do, and some dogs don't...SOme dogs won't eat dog poo, but they'll eat horse, or chicken, or cat...

It's gross, but the only thing you can do is clean it up as fast as you can, and work with the "Leave It" command.  It's good for a lot of things.  I used it with my GSD for everything from somebody's plate sitting where he could reach it to the cat box.  It was great.  Too bad it didn't work with the live chickens...Bad for them, I mean
