I am having a tough time drying up my bitch'es milk. Its 5.5 weeks now. Pups are weaned. She is so full of milk that its dripping now. Tried all method from skipping a meal, readucing food and stopped any sucking from puppies fpr the last 2 days

YOU CANNOT LET THE PUPS SUCK AT ALL FOR A COUPLE WEEKS TO DRY HER UP.  FEED HER ADULT FEED AS I FEED MINE PUPPY BRAND WHILE FEEDING A LITTER AND BEING PREGNANT.  STOP THAT AND GO BACK TO THE STANDARD FOOD, FEED LESS A WEEK TO GET HER MILK TO SOFTEN IN THE TEETS AND DO NOT LET ANY PUPS SUCK OFF HER AT ALL, SHE WILL DRY UP WITHIN A WEEK FAIRLY WELL, TWO WEEKS GOOD.  IF YOU CONTINUE TO LET ONE OR TWO SUCKLE ON HER SHE WILL NOT DRY UP AND COULD GET MASTITIS.

she is on her adult diet, getting fed once a day. its about 2 days that i have completely kept her away from the puppies. its more difficult for me than her.

I generally slowly wean my pups off.  not cold turkey.  For a few days I'd let her nurse them a couple times during the day,  or put her with them at night.  and then slowly back off on how many times she is allowed with them to nurse.

if mom is totally away from pups, no food or water for 24 hours.   after that start with 1/4 meal, next day 1/2,  next day 3/4, fourth day normal meal.

this is from "dog owner's home veterinary handbook" 3rd edition.  we have followed  this for the last few years and never had a problem.  we keep the females in the house so they do not get over hot/cold or over work themselves.

here is what i do if i want to dry up mom early...   although i  let my bitches continue to feed them as long as she wants..... but if i had to wean her earlier..   I would feed her about 1/4 of her pre pregnant amounts.. for 2 days.. then increase to 1/2 the amount for a couple days.. then back up to normal amount..   really watch her water intake..   don't leave water down.. but offer her small amounts throughout the day.      I would also make sure she is away from the pups.. so she can't hear them or see them..    If she is FULL of milk..   I would hand strip her so she doesn't get mastitis..

Sometimes I just can't figure people out.
Crazydog,

Don't cut back on food, don't be in such a damned hurry to dry up her milk, if she's that full let the smallest pup give her some relief.   The milk will dry up when its time.

 I agree

Why trying to wean them if she still want to nurse..my bitch stop nursing the pups at 8 weeks..she was aloud to see them and let me tell you that when she decided it was time..she idin't let them nurse and pushed them away..naturally.

I don't know why people are such a hurry..
