Hello,

I just got a 12wk old gsd puppy.  Paid 800 for him.  Obviously at this point I have no intentions on breeding him. The breeder told me that if I want to breed him I have to pay an additional 500.   I just said ok cause i had no intentions to breed.  But my question is why would someone have to pay for breeding rights? He is my dog.  Can someone educate me please.

Thanks

SCAMMMMM............ Have you got his pedigree papers? if so breed away if you like.

(Provided hips/elbows etc are in order with your own dog and bitch breed for a reason and not just to fill the planet with more unwanted Dogs)

I think I have his pedigree paperwork. I will have to check to make sure.  I got his akc paperwork and the breeder had checked the box that i believe says  limited registration { im at work, no papers in front of me}.    So I will double check to see what all I got from her.

I just thought it was odd to have to pay an additonal 500 for breeding rights.

Thanks for the reply.

I'ts the breeders call at the time of sale. What does your sales contract say? Is it limited registration? It is hard for even the most experience breeder to tell what a pup will show,so they are protecting there bloodlines.Idont think that is the way, but to each his own, sorry you didnt ask before you made the purchase. My preference is limited, with exceptions, but I wouldnt charge extra to someone who had put in the time and money to meet my exceptions. Put up your bloodlines and maybe you can get some advise on the dog to see if it is worth breeding, working or showing. If not so what .Best

the pup is probably (pet quality) usually in the 800.00 range. the breeder is telling u a breeding quality pup cost 1000.-1500.or they dont feel u r  qualified to breed.its not a scam its being responsible .steve

STEVE

If it was 1,000-1,500 for a show/ breed or work quality dog thats fine.... its not the case here its an additional 500 to breed?
from the same pup.... thats not right 500 extra means its breed quality,

Anyway most dogs once they have no health issues can be improvers for some dog who has different faults..

If it is limited reg. you can never reg. the pups with akc and  if you do breed anyway after a writen contract was signed you voided that guar. if any you have and/or you could be charged with that extra money for you didn't get a breeding dog you got a pet dog, now if you wanted a breeding dog then the extra money should have been paid first.

"SCAMMMMM............ "
Badgsd I disagree with your calling this a Scam
.

There are many scams in the dog world which we see on this board: people advertising with pictures of dogs that they do not own/ selling sick dogs/ making unrealistic claims about a dog being the most titled dog in the world/ taking money and not sending the dog or the papers... Selling a dog with limited registration for les $$$ is not a scam!!!!

Put it in a different perspective: The breeder sells puppies for in this case $1300 with full registration to show/sport/breeding homes. Most families do not want breeding rights and should spay/neuter. The breeder offers the same puppy with limited registration to a family home with a mandatory spay/neuter and gives a $500 DISCOUNT off their regular price. This pays for the procedure and gives the family an opportunity to own a nice gsd at a bit more affordable price. This is not a scam; it is a good business agreement! There are too manny accidental breedings and the world does not need any more GSD mix breed puppies from a dog sneaking out the back door.

"Gsdmamma" Your pups breeder gave you a lower price without breeding rights and nothing unethical or "scam like" about saving you some money. We could all use an extra $500 saving in this economy!

OK FOLKS...............? SOUNDS LIKE THATS HOW YOU DO THINGS OVER THERE..?
THIS SIDE OF THE POND SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.
IF I SOLD ANYONE A PUP THE PRICE IS BASED ON ITS BREEDING AND SH / WK QUALITY NOT IF THEY ARE OR ARE NOT GOING TO BREED FROM IT?

ONCE PUP PASSES OVER TO ITS NEW OWNERS THEY HAVE FULL RIGHTS TO ITS BREEDING..ETC

NO TERMS OR CONDITIONS

I think a serious "breeder" explains all options to the future buyers. That way there are less misunderstandings. What I don't understand is that, apparently, the majority of the breeders in  the U.S. sell as either pet quality or show and breeding prospects. Who knows if the new "pet" owners actually purchase a pup that has the stuff for more and the new owner gets infected with dog sport and does have a good hand for it. As a breeder myself, I would be with them all the way if they changed their minds.
On the other side, what happens to the "show and breeding quality" buyers if ,for example, teeth are missing or when testicles don't drop to name only a few of the problems that can turn up.
The majority of breeders in Switzerland and the most in Germany too, sell their pups for one price. If I buy a dog, I get informed before I go to look for puppies. If a breeder can't give you the answers you need, then go on to the next one. You need to trust your breeder, just as a breeder should have a good feeling when selling their puppies.
