For all you breeders out there .... As you are waiting for your bitch to come into heat (because you're going to breed her) and you do the tissue check daily
which day do you count as your first? The day you see something of a reddish brown or when you see denifiate red? I am also doing the progesterone test but for the future I would like to estimate the day. There was a three day difference between the reddish brown and the bright red. Thanks in advance for your input.

When I check them and find the redish rust color I say the dog came in the day before.. It's worked for me for years but since I no longer breed it truly doesn't matter anymore

Usually at first there is a white or yellowish discharge, and then the heat period, or proestrus, begins, with the appearance of a bloody discharge and swelling of the vagina. This blood usually continues for 7-9 days. Of course each dog is different and this can vary from 2 to 27 days in irregular cycles.
Back in the day, breeders claimed 13 days from the first sign of blood was ideal. Reddish-Brown sounds like a show of blood to me.

Back in the day ... I would go from the first day I saw a spot on the floor and count 13 days! Plus I had males that made it known by their howling!! Today, I only have females
and miss the howling as an alert, but have to rely on smears or other tests. Never did the tissue thing back then LOL.
Thanks for the input.
