Its been 3 months since I started the raw diet. Before starting it my girl was plagued by skin infections, poor coat and failin over all health! Look what 3 months of raw feeding as done to her. No more skin infections and the coat is shiny! She's a new dog! Her energy is amazing and the look in her eyes please my heart soo much! This is a blessing! I have more money to spend on other people! :D

Well done Ari.  I think most of us that convert to a raw diet feel the same way.  My vets bills have gone down, my dogs are now living longer (over the last 10 years my dogs have all been over 13 years of age at death).  The oldest one I have at the moment was 14 last November and the last one I lost was a few weeks short of his 15th birthday.

I have been feeding raw for many years now and have never looked back.

I am interested to hear more about the raw diet. I have a 2 year old male gsd who has had on and off bouts of dry skin.  His coat is generally good, but when the season changes and he spends more and more time in the house, he gets dry and scratches a lot. He is also a little on the light side-has never been a very greedy eater. I currently feed him Iams ProActive health dry and Pedigree canned food with a fish oil supplement. As I child my grandfather was the master of hounds for a hunt club in Virginia, and he fed the foxhounds half frozen raw chicken. He just opened the hounds keep and emptied a bucket of chicken backs and thighs onto the floor and a bucket of kibble! The hounds were always healthy and eating like that he said made them maintain a pack order that helped keep them orderly when hunting. He said a wolf never ate a kibbled chicken-so a hunting dog shouldnt have to either...

What kinds of raw food do you feed, how often, and is it supplemented with commercial dog foods at all? I will be bringing home a female puppy in a few weeks when she is old enough-so would like to introduce the diet to my male before she arrives. It sounds like there is some genuine support for it.

Thanks!

Hello,

You are right a raw diet is a blessing.  When the dogs are fed as nature intends they really do thrive.  There is a saying that is "You are what you eat."  I truely do believe that especially when it comes to the dogs.

There are several sites on the web where you can get info on raw feeding. I am new to it but I feed Halo fresh chicken leg quaters. and innova kibble with raw eggs mixed in. Also smoked turkey tails ,pork necks also fresh chicken backs  necks and liver and hearts. Make sure it is fresh or they will turn up their nose at it.I guess they are sensitive to spoiled meats not that I have tried to feed it. check out the sites and experiment.remember no cooked meat with bones.  I have never seen a dog build a fire to cook their food.Halos coat is shinny and no dry skin and she is slim and sleek.

Jess, she hasnt been to the vet since 3 months! I cant believe it! I wish I had started the day i got her!

Cymru, I give my girl chicken necks, back, wings, tripe, heart and minced beef. I add an egg every alternate day and add yoghurt to it everyday. I supplement it with one capsule of salmon oil 1000, vitaminc C and E and probiotics.

Raymond, I used to feed innova too but now i feed raw.

Good for you Ari - and it sure looks like it has been very good indeed for your dog.

When Pharaoh is hungry, he barks at the refrigerator.

It's funny, it's like this giant big leap the first time you give your dog a raw chicken bone (for example).  Everything we ever learned growing up runs contrary to feeding RAW,  plus all the dog food company brainwashing, so it's a difficult first step, but once you do, very few ever look back.

Pharaoh, you just made me laugh when you said, "he barks at the refrigerator".

It reminded me of last week or so's America's Funniest Video's. They showed a fridge with a chair blocking it, and then a German Shepherd just went ahead, moved the chair, opened the fridge and helped himself to a porkchop! And then he went back for what looked like a piece of cheese. The owner then  came through the outside door saying, "Oh man, you did it again!!!"

Thank goodness yours only barks!  Beautiful black dog, my first pound pup GSD was a solid black with a small white T on his chest. So of course we named him Teddy.
