Purchasing a kennel - Page 1

If you had the opportunity to purchase a dog kennel that houses 37 indoor out door kennel runs, grooming shop and of course indoor training facility would you buy ?

Want to make a living without working 7 days a week, 16-18 hours a day? You better know what you are doing. Do you have the experience to run and manage a facility? Deal with dogs who want to bite you? Worse yet, deal with people sometimes who are not so easy to deal with?

I own such a facility and I will sell it to someone who wants to pay the price. Problem is, no one is boarding dogs because no one is traveling because of the economy. You better do your homework.

If I was wealthy enough to keep it all for my personal use, hell yes.

If I had won the lotto and could have a non for profit rescue organization and have a few show/working dogs, I would JUMP at the oppurtunity!

Yes, I have managed 3 kennels in the past and to be honest with you two were awesome and the one was a hell hole. The latter one I quit directly but the two others I lasted for quite some time..

If I purchased the kennel I do not think I would board dogs I would open it up as a rescue and rehab center.. But your right Hodie people are hard to work with.. As to dog bites used to them.. Had my hand crushed by a rottie 20 yrs ago.. and that was only one of the many bites..

I have no desire to care for 37 dogs every day.... 8 is about my maximum.

I would check out how easy it is to get a mortgage on such a business..last I heard, for some reason, a lot of banks won't touch them.

I also don't know how much insurance is.

I know in some states the laws are as strict as they are for day care centers, in that you have to have a sprinkler system and kinds of expensive stuff to acquire a kennel license....I would look into that as well....

Yeah, 37 dogs is way over the top, the facility it self needs work then you have 5 acres to care for geeze I'd loose tones of weight.. LOL To be skinny again.. Just kidding.. The insurance would be about $2000.00 per year the taxes are $4800 per year the mortgage would be $2000.00 per month.. Then you have utilities food bills and of course the all might vet bills.. That's a load to think about!  Kinda scarry don't you think?

Having owned my own kennel, I second everything that Hodie just said.  I was fortunate in that I was booked 6-8 months in advance, never advertised and people would actually check my availabilty before making travel plans.  I was also fortunate that I lived very close to an affluent community.  I once took care of a Westminster winner (Best of Breed) and a $10,000 yellow lab imported from England, his owner used to bird hunt with Ted Turner.  On the flip side, I am 5ft tall and weighed about 100 lbs and you haven't lived until you have been dragged 50 ft by a 140lb male malamute or gotten cat scratch fever.   I miss it every day, I truly miss a great deal of my clients (the dogs), would I do it again?  NO!!  Another thing to consider, w/37 runs you will need help, I hired someone once, she had worked many years for another facility, the first thing she did was to reach out to a client to remove a small dog from her arms, I knew I was in trouble!  She once let a cat out for excercise in the grooming room without locking the front door, I could go on and on.  When a client trusts you to take care of their pet while they are away, that is a sacred trust, you will trust no one else, you will do most of the work and care of the pets yourself.  My husband would really kill me if I even entertained the thought.

That kennel property is a better deal than my home, insurance a bit higher.  Where is it???
