We have been waiting on my friends litter that was due on Sat. We just found out today that she xray'd false. No puppies. She is doing a repeat breeding but I'm wondering what causes a false pregnancy in dogs.
Thanks,
Tiffany
PS I dunno if she is going to wait on the repeat breeding or if she is going to look at other pups. She refuses to give a deposit.... So I dunno if she will find what she wants... She's looking for Conformation Show and Obedience and MAYBE something she can show in SchH.
Thanks,
Tiffany

It's her hormones telling her that she is pregnant. Here is part of an article on estrus that I copied for you:
After the mating and the discharge is over, the period of diestrus begins. The female is hormonally pregnant regardless of whether or not she is actually pregnant. During this time progesterone is produced by a structure in the ovary called a corpus luteum. This structure is produced by ovulation when the ova (eggs) are released. If the dog is pregnant, other hormones will eventually take over to maintain the corpus luteum for the entire 63 days of the pregnancy. If she is not pregnant, the corpus luteum must simply wear out before she goes back into the period of hormonal inactivity in which she spends the bulk of her time. The corpus luteum wears out slowly (rather than suddenly as in pregnancy and puppy birth) over 70 days or longer. Remember, during this time her body essentially thinks she is pregnant. All the hormones are present; only the puppies are missing.

Caused by retention of a growth on the ovary. It affects the bitch physically and emotionally. The abnormal behavior is controlled by ovaries that have gone astray.

Its also considered a through back to the eolf ancestry where only the alpha bitch is breed. The other females go into this stage to become suragate moms to the pups and help take care of them.
However, in this case, it looks like the bitch was breed and did not take or she may have re-absorbed the pups. I wonder why the breeder did not do the pregancy exams at 3-4 weeks to check for babies and a x-ray/ultrasound before the due date to confirm the pregnancy???
