My 16 month old working line GSD is always carrying something around in his mouth.  Especially when he's excited, he frantically searches for the first thing he can find (which is usually a shoe), pins his ears to his head and prances around.  I get the ear thing and the excitement, but not the shoe-giving.  My mom's golden retriever does this, too, and I thought it was just his being a retirever... maybe not... You hardly ever find my GSD without a toy or shoe.  And he NEVER destroys anything, just carries stuff around.  He even has a "play" area in the living room where he leaves all our shoes and his toys.

Any ideas?

I've had dogs who would bark with a toy in their mouth,  would only drop it to get a drink and to eat.  and even then the toy was right next to the bowl where they could see it.

its just something some of them do.
yours is a working line,  consider it toy drive.  it is a great training aid

Yasko also barks with toys in his mouth, that is talent!!!! :)))

My boy also does this he's excited.  For example when I get home from work and let him out of his kennel he must have a toy in his mouth before coming out of his kennel, and at feeding time he is prancing around with a toy while I'm getting his fod ready.  I just laugh at him and say at least he's happy.

My German Showline Molly does this as well.   Her breeder had told me when she was a pup that she liked to grab her bowl after eating and run around with it in her mouth.  Still does it 3 years later, lol.  I am just glad she finishes her food now before grabbing the bowl and prancing around the house.  She will do it with a toy as well, but the bad thing is if you try and grab the toy she will pee.  Not fun as I have to instruct the my nieces and nephews not to grab at her bowl or toy or there will be a puddle for them to clean up.

The other bad thing is I think this has contributed to her dumbell retrieve problem.  She likes to retrieve and carry, however does not like to calmly sit in front.  We have been working diligently on correcting this, but I think I encouraged the running around with something in her mouth too much and should have added the calmly in front part.
