Was wanting a bit of advice about my bitches recent litter. This is her 3rd  and she has only produced 4 pups, the second born was sadly still born, but was a very large pup, so we are now left with 3. Previous litters have produced 9 the first time and 8 the second. On her last season, she didnt show any signs that she was in season and my male wasn`t showing any interest. It was also only 5 months since her last one so when we found them locked together you can imagine my suprise. We did not feel she was up to full health to handle this litter so took her to the vets for the injection to terminate the pregnancy. I was wondering if this could have contributed to this rather small litter?

So she got the morning after shot and STILL had puppies?? There is a very small window during which that shot is effective and most vets would council against it ESPECIALLY in a breeding female  ....
So, if she still got the shot and had 4 pups, yeah I'd say the shot had something to do with it.. that and poor timing of it

I suggest you do some research on its side effects

The shot was 6 months ago and she did not produce a litter that time.

I think you answered your question with a question.Maybe not being fully healed from the last litter had something to do with it....
Bottom line is what did your Vet. say???

But the morning after shot does have side effects and can affect future fertility..... I think you need to consult with a repro specialist......

The vets said it was just one of those things, sometimes they have big litters, sometimes small. he did not seem to think the injection 6 months ago could effect this pregnancy, but it just seems a little strange to me when she is proven to have large litters in the past.

I know of several breeders that have had females with large litters (10 or 11 puppies.) with litters "back to back, then the next(3rd) litter a year later(skipping a cycle between the 2nd and 3rd) the female has 2 or 3 puppies.

One of our females did this. She had 9, 8, and then 2. All over skipped heats (every other heat ) and all with very healthy, fertile males. Sometimes it really just is natures draw.... but I would take the advice of those on the board and possibly seek out a repro specialist. Our vet does not rec. the morning after shot here so....

most reputable vets don't even use the morning after shot anymore.  it causes too many problems in the future.  I had a bitch given the shot,  she cleared a 6ft concrete wall and was bred by her father,  no way was that happening so her breeder took her for the shot,  after I got her,  I tried to breed her several times.  she would look bred,  then 3 weeks to being due she wouldn't.  like she lost the litters 1/2 way thru her pregnancy.  last time I bred her,  she carried 1 pup to term,  she couldn't pass it as the pup was dead and very deformed,  she had an emergency hysterectomy and nearly died.  vet said her utuerus was very damaged.  before all of this happened she carried and whelped a very large healthy litter.  no problems with her siblings or her mother.

the shot really messed her up,  even messed up her eyes.  she is now 50% blind in 1 eye and partially blind in the other.
