Breeders must make use of health screening schemes, relevant to their specific breed, on any dog being bred from. Dogs to be bred from must also be permanently identified by a DNA profile, microchip or tattoo. This petition is not asking you to join the Accredited Breeder Scheme – we are asking you to support the basic principles behind it as a way of improving the health and welfare of dogs in the UK and eventually put puppy farmers out of business.
If, with your assistance, we can gain government support for this proposal, it would mean that anyone breeding a dog would have to follow responsible standards in order to breed dogs. Anyone not following these standards would then fall outside of the law.

I haven't signed, Pam... sorry. The KC needs to take responsibility imo... they are, unfortunately, "the head of dogdom" in the UK. They could and should, refuse to register litters from dogs that have not had the necessary health checks, breed surveys etc... whatever is pertinant to each individual breed. This kind of lets them off the hook and saves them money (their God)! We all know the Accredited Breeder thing is worthless poop and guarantees nothing. jmho

have just a member of 'joe public' asking on a GSD forum about whether they should buy either a Westie or a Lab from a breeder in the Northeast that half her dogs arent registered and none have health test, plus she has 7 different breeds!
When will people learn?
ps nice to see so many names from GSD breeders on the list THanks to All.

Wildmoor, (Pam)
I think your contributions so far on other threads have been pheonominal and I applaud you for them. However I am on the same page as Missbeeb with this one.
It is apparent to me this is the Kennel Club finding yet another way to PASS THE BUCK. Well IMO as far as the KC is concerned THE BUCK STOPS THERE, reputable breeders dont need Goverment Legislation to make them do what they have been doing for years, all they need is for the Kennel Club to PUT THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF DOGS before the HEALTH AND WELFARE OF THEIR MONETARY POCKET and REFUSE TO REGISTER ANY LITTERS NOT CONFORMING TO AVAILABLE BREED HEALTH SCHEMES.
IT IS ACTUALLY THAT SIMPLE. No need to waste time in all the Red Tape of Goverment Legislation and quite frankly in the scheme of things havent Goverment a lot more pressing issues to spend their time on such as world peace, famine, global warming , unemployment and the credit crunch without debating the breeding practices of Dogs?
The KC are only doing this to protect their INCOME, they are quite capapble of Making it mandatory themselves in less than a year without the need for Goverment intervention but they simply do not want to loose their profit margins, so they are trying to make it illegal to breed litters without health checks and that way they can still register all the Puppy Farmed produce without any loss of revenue through the Mandatory demands.
Regards
Sue B
PS, If you truly love a breed you do what is necessary to enhance its improvement with Mandatory Legislation and the custodions of the Pedigree Registrations (i.e The Kennel Club) should be aiding these breeders by refusing to recognise those that do not adhere to improvement schemes. End of .

I have been saying this for a long time, but as always the KC put money like other businesses before Ethics.
Heres what I posted elsewhere back in March 2007
Lets hope the UK KC follow this and see some sense
' That as from 1st July 2007 German Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers, Australian Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers will be eligible to have registered progeny if their hip score is below the recommended score.'
The same is for elbows the sire/dam will have to have less than 5mm for progeny to be registered.
The rationale is due to the inheritability factor of hip and elbow dysplasia and the impact on the outcome of progeny in hip and elbow dysplasia.
Australian National Kennel Club
Just an update more good news; in Australia for breed surveys a dog must be elbow scored, it now looks like the SV are trying to catch up with them,
'dogs born after 1/1/2004 and presented for the Korung after 1/1/2008 would have to have elbows in addition to the other current requirements.'
If the Australians can do it why cant our KC?
I am just hoping this may give them the push to implement it when they see how many people are for it.
