I have been doing some research into the regularity of heart worm  medication.  I have found that temp and time of specific temps indicate the need or lack of need for year round medication.  In my locality of Chicago I have discovered it to be not indicated to dose year round but from march untill december.. For the parisite to develope it must remain above freezing consistantly for 30 days from the time the mosiquito becomes infected .as the medication itself is poisionous to the dog also why the need for year round dosage in climates not recommended for such dosage1 Any comments

My vet told me that it is not necessary to give heartworm medication during the  winter months, especially up north. In the spring/summer as soon as the mosquitos come out that is when it's time to put them back on it. I live in Florida and during the dry months(typically November through March or April) I never give my dogs heartworm medication and I've never had a problem. Same thing with flea/tick control. I only give Frontline during the months when ticks are out. Yes, it is poison and that is why I use it as sparingly as possible. I also don't give yearly vaccines. I have titers done instead.  My GSD who died last year at age 14  never had vaccines except Rabies after 2 years of age. I never boarded him or took him to a groomer, but if I did, he would've been required to have Bordetella (no titer for that).
