Despite already having seven charges of animal cruelty laid against the teacher, Kokstad police spokesperson Zandra Wiid told the Daily Dispatch that they were still gathering evidence, and confirmed that the teacher was still a free man.
Wiid said: “We were supposed to have taken the statement from the eye witnesses but they did not turn up.” She added that the police will take the statements on Friday and only then will an arrest be made.
Kokstad SPCA Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, who described the incident at the time as a “pre-mediated, malicious and calculated crime”, said the male cross-breed dog was later put down.
Wolhuter said on Thursday they were frustrated that the teacher was not arrested because of “unnecessary details”.
Wolhuter said he went to enquire about the latest developments to the police but he was told that the investigating officer was out of town.
An online petition – calling for firm action against the man who, over the weekend, tied a dog to his car and dragged it along the road before throwing it at the nearby bushes – garnered over 275 signatures on Thursday.
Furious bloggers posting comments on the original story, published this week on DispatchOnline, have joined the call for the teacher to be arrested.
“Name and shame him,” said Joe Citizen. “Do you realize that this distance is something like from Ashmel Spar (in Berea) to Selborne Primary?”
“There were no words to describe such a person,” said Mandy Human.
“Animals are helpless and we are supposed to be there to protect them.” Mandy Human added that the teacher should be punished the same way the poor dog suffered.
Gandalf said, “To try and kill a dog in this manner is absolutely beyond comprehension”.

I did try to sign the petition, but must've buggered it up 'cos my signature did not display (either that, or it's ended up somewhere else...who knows). As I said in my comment on my attempt to sign the petition, and, at the risk of sounding a wee bit redundant "MAKE THE BASTERD BLEED!"
