K9 Dreamz

I have a female that is 23 months old.  In October she starting itching like crazy, blew her coat, then came into heat, blew what was left of her coat.  She is still itching but has NO Hotspots, NO redness, NO sores or anything. Her dogfood was at 27% protein, but I changed her to a 21% protein, almost 23 days ago, due to the fact our exercise habits have slowed due to extreme negative temperatures.  Her itching over the last couple weeks has finally calmed down, Is it possible the protein level is causing her itching or just a coincidence it has slowed?? Any suggestions that can make sure she is getting the nutrients she needs?  I have done allergy testing and it came back negative, also did skin scrapes for yeast or bacteria and nothing, she itches but has no signs of discomfort on skin at all.  Any input at all would be great.

Hi Kari,
When did she come into heat? It usually takes about 2 months for the hormones to level out after they have gone through the heat cycle. My female also is itchy during her heat and for about 2 months following. My guess is your girl's itchiness has little or nothing to do with the protein level in the food. Are you feeding her a high quality food? Have you tried adding enzymes (such as Nzymes or Prozyme) or salmon oil to her food? Enzymes will help her digest and utilize the nutrients in her food better and the oil will help her skin and coat. There's also a yahoo chat for itchy dogs and they may be able to help you. If you're really want to go all out you can try a raw diet- that helped my girl a lot. There is nothing better to feed your dog than a raw diet. There is a raw chat on yahoo also and the people can help you a lot.
Best of luck to you,
Char

My dogs get dry itcht skin about that time of year too. Not sure if it's allergies or justthe dry air. Doubt it's the food.

We are feeding a very high quality food, She was in heat in December, so I guess it will be a few more weeks until the itching stops.  I thought it was weird not having any signs other than just itching.  Gave her a bath today which is her first since May of last year, put on a leave in conditioner, hope it helps if it is just dry skin too, Thanks everyone for their comments.

Had the same problem, fixed by adding ACV to the food, and switching to Fish based kibble rather than the chicken, everything clean up within a week.

If you going to use it use it unfiltered organic. Google apple cider use in animals and you will find a lot of bennefits.

I was advised to drop the protein levels to resolve itchyness in a male - within 10 days there was a noticeable difference.

Go to you pet food store and pick up some sea grass works wonders. Stops itching and sheading coats are shinny and thick.. You'll love it we use it here so I can verify it works like a dream
