find an old breeder willing to mentor you.  someone who knows the lines. and I am not alking about someone whose bred for maybe 5 years.  I am talking about a breeder who has been around 20+ years.
good luck cause most breeders aren't very willing to mentor anymore.

Ronnie, that is so old.

The modern version of that phrase is, "Love is Never Having to Say Excuse Me." I never did care for Ali McGraw for some reason. Don't even dream of mentioning the name Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Raymond, start looking at all the pedigrees all these knowledgeable people keep mentioning. After awhile, if you keep clicking away and thinking about what you see, you can start to make your own connections. And then don't be afraid to ask these very smart folks about your observations, and then you will be forming a plan of what you are looking for to complement your GSD. Of course I'm a non-breeding pet owner, but that's what I'd do, because finding an old timer to mentor you could be tough, as previously suggested.

once you work out how to choose good breeding pairs you really need to understand all that is involved with raising a good litter.  all you have to do is hang out at a shelter or talk to a long term rescue person to realize just how many problems are actually set in place by a breeder who does not know how to raise pups properly.  a very accessible book and imo a good place to start - quick easy read - is a new book by Jerry Hope entitled "The Breeder's Guide To Raising Superstar Dogs" you can find it at http://www.tawzerdogvideos.com/Canine-Educational-Material.htm or you can get it directly from jerry's website http://www.k9fixer.com/Books.htm  - good luck
