My litter is now 12 days old and they seem to be of good and correct size. few queries.

I started weaning my puppies 2 days ago on cerelac stage 1, puppies seem to love it and will be going to stage 2 in a few days time. They have reduced the quantity of milk that they drink from the mother or from the bottle. I am worried because it is really hot and I dont want the puppies dehydrating. By the way, puppies are spoon fed, they still do not know how to eat on there own. Some have an idea about licking but most don't.

Any tips on weaning like when and how to introduce water and what is a good home made food.

It's WAY too early to ween these puppies!  They still need the mother's milk!  MOST puppies don't start eating anything other than mothers milk until they are 3 to 4 weeks old!  If you have to spoon feed them it is WAY WAY WAY WAY TOO EARLY!

Is this a for real question or a joke?

if i had a litter of 12.. i would also start to supplement thier feeding to help mom out..   from week 3 to 4  I would feed goat's milk.     from 4 weeks  I make a milkshake for my pups..  I use  2 cups goats milk,,  2 eggs,  1/2 cup yougurt and a 1/2 cup cottage cheese and blend..    make room temp before feeding..   once the pups are closer to 5 weeks.. i start adding meat into thier milkshake..  by the time they are 6 1/2 weeks.. no more milkshake.. and they are weaned onto a raw diet.

good luck with your pups..  I hope to NEVER have 12 puppies on one mom!  :o)       oh.. also at 3 weeks of age.. the pups take just a few times before they will begin to lap at the milk.  make sure the bowl is low..  and the goat'smilk is warm..  they make a mess at first.. but they will get it.

The pups are 3 & half weeks old, its a good time to wean as there is only milk for about 20 min before the mother is drained out.

Having a large litter is not a joke, puppies were supplemented starting 2 days old and so far I have lost non, all are equal in size and of correct weight so i must have been doing something right.

Crazydog, i think your 1st post may have caused the confusion, as you said the puppies were only 12 days old. liz

Well done crazydog, I also hope never to have 12 puppies in one litter.Yes goat milk is about the best to start your puppies on gradually adding blended puppy kibble and plain yoghurt then beef mince. At 24 days your girl has done very well to feed them all and it is time to give her a hand.

Hi crazydog,

Congradulations on your extended family, I have just started weaning my litter of ten also,

I feed them Fromm Gold adult kibble softened with warm water, add some nutrional yeast, yogurt,
milled flaxseed, and small bite size cut up raw chicken thighs, or I switch & use ground turkey or hamburg.

My last litter of pups I had, the mom kept nursing everyone till the last pup went home, she didn't know

she could stop nursing them  about the 51/2 week old stage, it was her first litter, she was the best mom
she got so skinny, now I am trying to beef her back up, it took alot out of her.

I base weaning the pups on the amount of noise they are making, if they are crying alot, they want real food,
it just one pup is crying when everyone is sleeping, he then is the spokeperson for the group, and they are thirsty!
In the very beginning,  I make sure they are drinking water that has been filtered or boiled, no tap water, that upsets their stomach.

Have fun with everyone!
