I started weaning my puppies 2 days ago on cerelac stage 1, puppies seem to love it and will be going to stage 2 in a few days time. They have reduced the quantity of milk that they drink from the mother or from the bottle. I am worried because it is really hot and I dont want the puppies dehydrating. By the way, puppies are spoon fed, they still do not know how to eat on there own. Some have an idea about licking but most don't.
Any tips on weaning like when and how to introduce water and what is a good home made food.

good luck with your pups.. I hope to NEVER have 12 puppies on one mom! :o) oh.. also at 3 weeks of age.. the pups take just a few times before they will begin to lap at the milk. make sure the bowl is low.. and the goat'smilk is warm.. they make a mess at first.. but they will get it.

Having a large litter is not a joke, puppies were supplemented starting 2 days old and so far I have lost non, all are equal in size and of correct weight so i must have been doing something right.

Hi crazydog,
Congradulations on your extended family, I have just started weaning my litter of ten also,
I feed them Fromm Gold adult kibble softened with warm water, add some nutrional yeast, yogurt,
milled flaxseed, and small bite size cut up raw chicken thighs, or I switch & use ground turkey or hamburg.
My last litter of pups I had, the mom kept nursing everyone till the last pup went home, she didn't know
she could stop nursing them about the 51/2 week old stage, it was her first litter, she was the best mom
she got so skinny, now I am trying to beef her back up, it took alot out of her.
I base weaning the pups on the amount of noise they are making, if they are crying alot, they want real food,
it just one pup is crying when everyone is sleeping, he then is the spokeperson for the group, and they are thirsty!
In the very beginning, I make sure they are drinking water that has been filtered or boiled, no tap water, that upsets their stomach.
Have fun with everyone!
