I was called by the local shelter friday, they had a young gsd that if they could not find someone to help it they would put her down. I wanted to see the dog thinking she may have been a pup from the mom that was given to a new home, supposed to have been spayed and hadnt yet, my bad, I should have spayed her before she was given to the new home.
Anyways, I went to look at the pup and poor baby is in horrible shape. She appears to be about 6 months or so according to the vet, she has demodex mange and a severe secondary skin infection, her temp was 106, you cant touch her legs, if you do the edema is so bad it will immediately start oozing blood. She is neg on heartworms but she does have hooks and tapes. He put her on 250 mg amoxi twice a day and .5 cc of ivermectin daily increasing it by .5 once a week until reaching 2.0 per day for the demodec. I have her on Diamond Naturals Lamb and Rice, small meals 3 x a day til we get some weight on her, she is 44 lbs. The pic does not show the thinness of her. I am giving her Gentle Digest (pre and pro biotics).
I did give her a bath today in Oatmeal shampoo just to get some of the crud and stench off of her, poor baby cried as I knew she would but then she felt better after the oatmeal soothed her skin.
Is there anything I can put on her or give her to help dry up the skin  and ease the pain and the itch? Steroids and cortisone is out. So far she appears to have a good temperment, she shows no food or dog aggression and was excellent being handled by the vet and techs even tho you know it hurt. The only time she has done anything was putting her teeth on the hose, she did not bite or bite down, more like mouthing it to say it hurt.
Any advice or tips that will help her heal faster would be greatly appreciated. I have to keep her outside during the day at the shop, clients would have a cow if they saw her in the same area as their foofoo dog lol
I would like to shoot the person that allowed the dog to get in this condition grrrr.

Just wanted to say how lucky this girl is to be with you now, she looks very sweet.  I don't have much experience with this type of thing, but I would put aloe in her food (to boost immune system and therefore help with the demodex) plus put aloe gel on her dry skin.  I am sure someone will be along soon to help you further.

Good luck

The product Septiderm-V shampoo as well as lotion has worked quite well for my dogs whenever they have any skin issues.  It soothes the skin and helps heal it, when other shampoos and ointments tend to dry out the skin too much and cause a gunky buildup.  You can get both at Petco as well as online.

Thank God they called someone to help as most vets would probably have just put the dog down.  Good luck and may the person who did this rot in hell!

I had a Dobe, once upon a time, that arrived to me with Demodex. I can't remember how often now, but the vet made me give her baths with an Iodine-based shampoo, it was strong. Mange is a parasite that must be hit from both directions is what he told me. Inside and out. She will dry up and probably look like hell for a while but sometimes the cure is tough to looks at but the outcome can be good. That was a long time ago but it worked and i guess that's all that really matters.

Coat Handlers product called "The Skin Works" works on demodex as well as infections, it doesn't sting and helps heal very quickly.  I use it on all broken skin problems.  It is an amazing product.  Good luck with her!

You may also want to look into a micronutrient supplement I use called Source Plus. Does wonders for skin and coat, and much more. I would put her on a food with a meat base high in healthy fats and essential oil, like. Fromm Salmon and Veg is great, diamond foods are just ok. What kind of pathetic human being lets a puppy, or any dog, get in this condition? Bless your heart and best of luck with her.

Bless her... and bless you, for looking after her!  What about some homeopathic treatments?

I have worked on many dogs with skin issues, normally yeasty with secondary skin infection, I have little ( read that to mean NO) experience with red mange.  In this area I have very few choices of food available. Mainly what tractor supply carries. They are carrying the Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and that is what I am feeding her right now but it is almost gone and TS does have it in stock but is not reliable to keep it in stock , I believe they just started carrying Blue buffulo  I saw the 48.00 price for a 20 lb bag and walked on by lol

http://www.qbased.com/info/ingredients.html

Here is a list of the good lotions and creams and sprays  that are natural and can be used,,it shows the names of what ingredients are used for skin relief.
You probably have a shampoo that has those ingredients in it...look and see....   tea tree oil with some herbs in it...many shampoos have these things in them..//

Boast the immune system with raw meats , vit ester c and vit e...Be sure that you give him omega threes with fish caps or salmon fresh Alaskian Oil, and many other things you can add gradually.

Also a supplement called   Red Cell. for dogs/  which is great for reviving a sick dog....feed stores cell it usually as it is made by the company that made horse  Red Cell..

Hello again Shandra, it has been a long time! I hope you have been well? Check with the vet first, but there are inexpensive sprays that can relieve the sting & help keep the areas clean, some with Aloe vera, that are commonly used on human sunburn  that I have used with success on a dogs' irritated skin, available at any drugstore or supermarket, but they contain xylocaine(sp?) or lidocaine, so be sure to check with the vet first...also spray on benadryl might help relieve the redness & puffiness, even an oral dose or two might not hurt, as the mites have caused a histamine response which is why there is so much inflammation, but again, and I stress this, ask the vet first. Good luck, what a sad pup....hope he makes it, poor thing. Best Wishes, jackie harris
