A puppymill is like a farm whose crop is puppies. Their main purpose is to make a living off of selling pups, mainly to pet stores. And since it is similar to a factory farm, the dogs are usually treated like livestock, caged, little interaction, whose main purpose is to be bred and produce. No or very little interest is taken in temperment or confomation or quality.

- Use untested breeding stock, some sort of working title, hips/elbows at a minimum.
- Young breeding stock. Breeding before the animal is at least 16-months, prefer 24-months
- Kennel areas crowded, not clean, dogs health is not looked after
- Only "claim to fame" is "Parents are from titled this or that"
- Almost any combination of the above
I do not consider a puppy mill to:
- Be a larger breeder that may have numerous litters in a year.
- If they are testing their dogs, same criteria as above
- Are not breeding underage dogs, same criteria as above
- Kennel areas are clean and dogs are well taken care of
- "Claim to fame" is actually using their dogs for work of some kind.

What about ones that basically fall into both of your categories, what about the large breeders that have 20-30 breeding dogs, that are basically kept in kennels all the time, minimal human unteraction, except to breed and a possible 3 minute training session. Dogs are titled but never compete except for shows. pups are given quickie titles, just so that they maybe bred and shown. Studs dogs out when ever possible, to the point some dogs won't even do their deeds, gives them medication or does AI's

My top list pretty much sums up my thoughts on puppy mill conditions. Young, untested, dirty conditions. A place can be a puppy mill with no kennels at all and still meet the main criteria. A large breeder may have many kennels, clean, dogs health well taken care of, testing done, and not be a puppy mill.

ok large breeder top 3 in country
1. 27+ litters a year. all showline priced $2000 (pet quality/long coats)-$4000 and up.
2. breeding stock 99% quickie titles in Germany or California, (1) stud actually competed in schutzhund trial before. Most couldn't bite a sleeve to save themselves from getting a beating.
3. kennel area crowded, somedogs in crates, since not enough people to foster dogs. usually clean but shavings and wood dust all over, very high fire hazzard.
4. except for worming pups, no other shots usually given only visit to vets, for breeding check-ups, major illness, or hips and elbo's
5. has bred to dog(s) under 16 months, and believe SV rules say 24 months for males
6. only claim to fame is VA's on some of breeding stock. and pedigree of dogs, lots of throphies
7. been known to pull dog from breed survey take to another breed survey cross country where she is judges friend, or know she can bribe them.
In my book nothing more than a large puppy mill, am I right or wrong.
