I believe the dog is first and foremost a pack animal. But with this said - even in a pack society there are rules and emotions. Dogs do percieve the perception of right and wrong as well as fair and unfair. This has been the center of some recent studies that have been published.
I know I have seen dogs mourn, happy, sad, etc... but - the relationship with Humans is based first on Pack mentality and then emotions play secondly.
In my house - I am the pack leader or Alpha. Then secondary to this is my female who is the Alpha in my particular pack. Once the "pecking order" is there - emotions absolutely are seen in all the dogs and will determine how the pack developes and works/ plays together. I have had dogs to cross the Rainbow Bridge and witnessed their mourning. I have also seen anger, happiness, frustration, depression, etc... in all my dogs.
No - you cannot treat or expect the dog to react or think emotionally as humans do. Pack mentality will be a strong factor in thier thought processes. But yes - they do have emotions and actions based on them on continous basis just as humans.
I hope you understand what I am saying here. If not - I will try to be more clear. Let me know.
