Kelly M Shaw

by Kelly M Shaw on 22 January 2009 - 17:01

Long story short my 11 year old German shepherd Cierra has kidney disease. I have been buying the prescription Hills science diet KD for her condition and it has worked out very well for her. It has maintained her levels very well. The down side of the Hills KD is that they increased their prices. I was paying $71 and change for a 40 pound bag of food, and now it has gone up to $82.29 for a 40 pound bag. Their 20 pound bag as gone from $41.50 to $48.89. My question:  is there another kind of prescription dog food that carries the KD that is needed for her kidney disease that would cost less? This is just costing WAY too much for me to keep her on, but if I have to I will.
Thank you in advance.

I would check the ingredients on the bag and compare them with similar low-protein product formulas. Eukanuba also produces prescription diets. Your vet is probably taking a huge mark-up. SS

Hey Kelly,

Try looking up the following:

NF Dog Food
Royal Canin Renal Diet
Purina NF

I always used to check www.discountpetdrugs.com too.

I would look at ingredients of course but it's a start.  I believe the above site still has Hills for 72.00.

Good luck.

You must be VERY careful about trying to switch foods as someone above suggested. There is a lot more to a diet for kidney failure than just finding a low protein diet. It is horrible for many of us who care for infirm dogs (or people for that matter), when prices and costs keep going up. The only real alternative is to pay the price or, if the dog is really old and ill, consider the alternative. That is never easy to do. There are other companies who make renal diets, but they will all be expensive. Talk to your vet about price. If finances really are a hardship, tell him/her. And call other vets too and explain your situation. I know in the case of my facility and my own vet, we make nothing on food. The food is already so expensive at my cost, I cannot possibly really mark it up. And I only sell a few bags and only as a favor to a few clients anyway. I mark it up 2-3 bucks a bag to help feed the rescues and it does not really help there much either because the food is expensive.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I appreciate it. I have talked to my vet and he said he isn't getting anything extra that it's all Hills science diet. I was emailed a link to a site that the Hills KD was about $7 cheaper on a 40 pound bag than what I'm paying, but I don't know how much shipping is on that either. I am a little weary on going to a different brand name other than Hills KD. She has been on it for a few years now with good results.  If I have to pay the big bucks I will for her. She is not in the greatest health as her cancer has come back. I will be setting her up for surgery once again. She has major life to her yet so I will not give up on her, she is my BIG baby :-)

Shannan, I will check out that website, thanks soo much!!!
