Can Pano be a sign that the dog will have bad hips/elbows in the future? My male had it as a puppy, our vet looked him over, gave us some Rimadyl and sent us on our way. I haven't thought about it since, but another board got me thinking. I hope I'm just being a worrisome dog mom.

pano is inflammation of the bursa surrounding the long-bones, causing soreness.  Growing pains.  People get them too, usually in the thighs and lower legs.  Has nothing to do whatsoever with the joints.  If the soreness is coming from pano, your pup will get over it, it may return but eventually they will go away permanently.

I've never heard of Pano...interesting.  Could this explain why my 4 month old puppy sometimes cries out when she is playing too hard and romping through the house?  Every once in a while she pulls up lame and cries, I look her over and can't find anything and off she goes like nothing happened.  Freaks me out but I keep thinking I'm just being a worrisome puppy mom.  She has done this only 3 or 4 times that I have witnessed.  She goes in in 2 wks for her rabies shot and I will mention it to the Vet then.

4 months is quite young for the pup to have pano.  Pano is Panosteitis - may have spelled that wrong - growing pains.  The imperfection in the long bone can be seen on x-rays, so if the pup is lame and you are concerned, x-rays can diagnose pano or not.  Remember pano is in the LONG BONES.  Not joints.  4 months is really too young to be affected by pano.  Usually it occurs in the 'fast growth periods' 6-12 months.

Good response, Molly. I've had GSDs with Pano that had good hips and elbows, and a dog that never had Pano at all that had bad joints.

An excellent supplement to use for Pano and for the bone development of puppies as well as throughout their lives is Hokamix, the tablets are best for the puppies and young dogs. My puppy developed Pano and it was contributed to by the dog food. The food was a very good food but when I asked the vet on staff with the company at a seminar that was put on I was told that it has been developed to promote fast growth. Within 1 1/2 weeks of putting the puppy on Hokamix the symptoms went away.

Molly,

Thanks for the imput...she isn't lame all the time...just for a matter of seconds (until she forgets she hurt herself) but as for fast growth periods between 6 - 12 months, if she grows any faster than she has this last month I'll be suffering growing pains myself!  I have got to get her on the scales and see how much she has grown. I swear I can see her growing right in front of me.  We take a photo of her every Friday in the same setting and there is a two week jump in size that to me is astounding.  We changed her food and she just took off.  If I was at home I would try to attach those two photos so you could see what I'm talking about and maybe you could tell me if that is normal.  I'll try to get that done later.
Thanks again!

my male when through panno . i put him on ester c and that made all the difference. he grew 2 inches in a months way too fast, i also have him  on a lower protein food , that helps slow the growth down a bit.

IMO, Pano is a genetic issue along with the diet.  I have a female that had 3 bouts of Pano til she was 11 mos.  She was (unfortunately)on Nutro Natural lg. breed pup. til 6 mos and that is when it began.  I researched Pano/diet correlation and put her on RAW , she then had 2 more bouts of it til she was almost a year, but they didn't last very long.  She at 2 years is 27" at the withers and 95#.  I have seen her siblings, and they are all tall, and at least one other had Pano as a pup.  This was the first litter in this breeding and the breeder has only had one other litter(different stud)  since.  So far the next ltter hasn't had any issues w/ height or Pano, that I have heard of.  She went with a Czech line to blend w/ her W. German, they are great workers, live on a ranch herding cattle and horses.

Hi,

Having pano doesn't mean that your dog will have pad hips/elbows in the future.  In bigger breed dogs, they sometimes get pano because they grow too fast.  My dog had pano and recovered and was pain free until he developed arthritis at the age of 11.  However, if you are using Rimadyl to control the pain caused by pano, just make sure you know the side effects.
