I am new to the board and  am hoping to get some clarification on conformation of the German GSD. The people on this thread seem to be quite knowledgable, so I figured I'd ask a couple questions.  I love theGeman GSD and have had both a German show-line GSD and a working line dog over the past 20 years. The working line dogs and the show-line dogs are quite different in structure and I've always wondered why and how this happened- after all they were both developed in Germany.
Why did the Germans go in what seems like 2 very different directions regarding the structure of  GSD?
As far as the German show-line dogs go, most of them seem to have what I would call a "roached" back to some degree. What purpose does the "roached" back serve?  Is this something that is desirable no matter how extreme?
I hope someone can educate me! Thanks!
