A gal has a GSD that is 15 months old.  He has been Penn Hipped and OFA prelimed good.  His sire was diagnosed with PRA and Pancreatitus.  The pair ( his sire and Dam) produced pups with Panosteitis, Aortic Stenosis, and heart Murmurs.

This dog was bred and has 2 litters on the ground.  The b-dates on these pups are Dec 16 and 27, 2008.  So these breedings occured when he was just a year old.

Can this breeding be justified due to the fact that he is Penn Hipped?  She is also offering these pups as "service" animals.  Please correct me if I am wrong but this makes me angry...  Another irresponsible breeder??

Definitely irresponsible. That's what happens when people breed dogs to make a fast buck without consideration for the puppies or future owners and the breed in general. You need to look beyond people's claims and how "nice" they try to be. If you have reputable contacts that are breeders and owners, call upon them. Do as much research as you can. Even then there are no guarantees.

How do you get a dog that has strong nerves to bark????? Agitating the fire out of him doesn't work. He will jump, lunge, stay right at the end of the tie out, but not bark. A little whimper here and there, but no bark.

Shannan, what is your opinion???

Shannan you have every right to vent, and yes it is irresponsible. I just found a website that they bred a 14 month old female. These type of people are out for the green and nothing else. IMO you should give the female time to grow and mature as well as do the normal OFA's before breeding her and at 15 months old or in the case of the website I was on 14 months old is WAY too young in my honest opinion to be bred. The saga will only continue and probably get worse the way the economy is going.

now this, unlike the breeding discussed on the ethical breeding thread, is unethical and completely unjustifiable!  very sad situation and to sell them as service dogs is "adding insult to injury".

I agree, not good!  However, just an FYI.  Pancreatitus isn't inherited.  It is an illness that has nothing to do with genetic inheritance.

I know that pancreatitus isnt hereditary or genetic but the health issues of this dog were insane...  In my opinion, as a breeder who tries very hard to do the right thing, this is very, very wrong.  Once in a while though in the heat of the moment I can get a bit carried away and especially when it involves one of the dogs I have bred...  It's always nice to know I am thinking in the "right mind"...

Thanks...

Shannan
