I think its too hot for my puppies, i saw them panting and crying in the afternoon. there room is under a tree and has a fan on full time.

I wiped them clean with a wet towel and they seem to quiten down alot and went to sleep. Is there a better way to cool the pups down.

young puppies cannot regulate their own temperatures until they are several weeks old - it is very VERY important to make sure they are warm enough, but not too warm.  Too cold and they will not nurse properly, organs will stop working properly and they can become lethargic and dehyrated.  Too hot and they can quickly become dehydrated - and it doesn't take long (hours maybe) for a dehydrated puppy to die or become seriously ill - organ failure and inoceception (death of the gut).

Shade from direct sunlight.  If they can be indoors put them in a room where they have blankets, newspapers or towels, but also have access to tile or other cool flooring if they want.  Open windows or close windows and put on air conditioning (be careful, they also can't be too cold).  You can also help if they are too hot by freezing plastic water bottles and placing the frozen bottles down withthe puppies - if they need to cool off they can be next to the bottles, if not they can move away from the bottles.  Of course you would have to keep refreshing the frozen bottles so they didn't  become warm bottles.

good luck, hope your pups are ok.

Crazydog, how old are your puppies?

by candis on 20 January 2009 - 11:01

As Mooly stated pups have no way of regulating their temperture.. If you find them having to hard or a time breathing place their feet in cold water for a few seconds.. That should help..

I got a thermometer with an alarm on it well worth a few £ we have an AC/heater unit that keeps a constant temp in the room.

soaked towels on a tile floor work well as do frozen pop bottles.

What temperature is it there?  I wish I could say it was too hot here. We have had -35 degree nights and lower with the windchill, tell them if they don't like the heat they can have some of our cold.  I could box you up some snow we have plenty.
However, froze water bottles as stated above is best.

Crazydog,

How are your puppies today?

When it gets too hot here for puppies I use the frozen cubes you put in the esky / icebox, just wrap in a towel and place around the whelping box and a couple of wet towels.

Hope that it is cooler for them today.
