I have noticed here in Australia that female Shepherd's definitely appear more popular than a male when purchased for a family pet. Several breeders I have spoken with confirmed that female puppies were more sought after with males at times often difficult to sell or chosen when the females of the litter are all taken.

I assume that perhaps people believe that a female may be easier to handle or perceive them to have a sweeter nature, less aggression???, but I am curious if this tends to be a world wide trend also???. We have had only one female Flat Coated Retriever back in the early '80's and since then have always chosen males, not that our Flat Coat girl wasn't a lovely dog, she was a gorgeous companion we adored for 13 years, but a male visually where I am not referring to show standard confirmation only general appearance seem to reflect a more visually stimulating example of the breed??.

I thought perhaps too that people may initially have thoughts of breeding when purchasing a pedigree dog where a female would be the obvious choice providing such an option, but it's something that's come to mind that interests me as to others opinions of this perception??.

I find just the opposite here in New York, not only do most ask for a male, THEY WANT LARGE Males,

I like females more than males, it is just a baisad that males are tougher, that they are better dogs. I used to had only males, now I am a beliver that males are just big bone heads lol :)

Rexy
Yes, the Females do have a sweet nature, and that is not only applying to Dogs,
But the Female also has just a stronger aggession as any male, more so when they are with there young, and we all know the Female is the Alpha of any pack,
We poor Males think we are, its the only thing that keeps us going,
But we never complain we know our place and to grumble is pointless

Females are just what they are, hence the name "Bitches" the female GSD can go off on a member of the pack for

no apparent reason, if only to show the others that she's the boss, or someone invaded her space

Where as the males are happy go lucky, acting goofy & enjoying life, but yet willing to get serious & get back

to work when told to do so

Male's most definitely to look at catch my attention more than a female does in most breeds being larger with I guess more defined features, but there are defintely more female's that I have taken a liking to their personality when I come to think about it.

Females might be "sweet" yes, but an be "bitches" as one said too.   :)

My male is a big"presence" in the house.   But, he is ruled by the two girls!  LOL I don't know if I have a preference of male or female, but I do know that I won't have two strong females in the same house again.     Though, I've heard that mother/daughter can work....

Actually Rezkat5, our breeder claimed that the most severe dog fights he had seen between GSD'S of one family are having two dominant females together which he believes is a combination to avoid at all costs.???. He told us that two males are good together having one 4 to 5 years older will generally produce a good relationship between them where the young male will instinctively respect the mature one and accept him as the boss???.

yes, i agree there rexy!   At the time when I got the second female, I thought that the older one would maybe have chilled out a bit.  Basically I thought that when the younger one matured, the older one would be just that old.   LOL  NOPE!       I may have been able to give it a go again with some serious work, however around that time I got pregnant and that was obviously more important.   Hence they are separate.  The bad fight was not as severe as others I've heard, but I got hurt and the older girl got hurt.  And actually had them together again afterword.     Had a brief fight and honestly was just easier and less stressful to have them separate .

How I know the male is so not in charge.   He couldn't have been further away when the fight happened!   Seemed to be on the other side of the yard, saying "you guys are in so much trouble!" LOL
