i'm just curious as to what is considered ideal height for a female gsd. i know the standard says 22-24 inches for females and my girl measures at 23, so i would think that would be a good height. yet everywhere i go i get comments that she is so small, they have or know someone with a huge female that is alot taller and weighs 90 pounds (spunky is somewhere over 60#) and people keep asking me is she a puppy cuz she is sooooo little. nenz never got called little. he was 26 inches, just 3 inches taller but alot broader with that huge head. spunky is almost 2 years but people just can't believe it when i tell them that since she is not huge like they think gsds are or should be.

Your dogs is within standard, be happy and screw John Q Public. My dog is huge and I still get retarded comments like that.

Breed standard is.........
Bitches 22-24 inches (55-60cm.)

There are way too many oversized GSD's out there.......General public is ignorant, bigger is NOT better in this case!

When people comment, educate them.

Just to answer your question, I like a female close to 24 inches at the shoulder, at the high end of the breed standard.

There is a bias against small males, say just 24 inch, at least in many show rings. For AKC, a male that is between 25.5-26.5 inches tall has a better chance of winning.  The standard is 26 inches for males, but half an inch over is practically speaking not a fault at all.

The bias against small females, 23 inches and less, may not be as strong.

I was so told by an AKC GSD judge.

23" to the shoulder is the ideal height for a gsd bitch 1" either above or below this height is permitted its in the standard but would agree that most show winning bitches are more top end of height.

I have 2 female's. 1 measured at 22.5 inches, and the other at 23.5 inches. Now my 11 year old is 27 inches and is 100 pounds. Everyone thinks she is a male until I tell them HER name. I do think that is way too big  for a female, but she is my baby. I agree with 4pack, screw the public. If your dog is within standard kodos to you.

I get the same with my 59 CM bitch (23 inches) and 58 pounds,  she's exactly within standard and people ask if she's till a puppy or "small"  Meanwhile the Koermeister considering her to be large!

People are always going to have something to sayno matter what!  I just smile and wave.

Just tell John Q public that no, she's actually the CORRECT size.   Just like people always ask why my dogs are so thin.   Well, I try to refrain, but usually end up saying, because everyone else's in so FAT!  LOL

I've learned the average person would not know a "real" GSD if it bitt them in the arse.  No wonder when you look at some of the dogs they try to pass off as a German Shepherd.
