Okay, my male GSD has taken to removing tidbits of food left on a particular table by Peter's father. Unfortunately, it's too hard to teach grandpa to remember to remove his dish at least from this particular dog head height table. Apparently this morning unbeknown to me, my darling dog nabbed a particularly special bit of cheese grandpa was saving for later when I was busy elsewhere. While I do regularly crate/kennel him, many times when I am home, he is in the house and yard. So I was thinking about putting a mouse trap on the table, but before I do, does anyone know if the little snapping neck type mouse traps are strong enough to do some sort of serious injury to the tongue or lip or whatever gets caught? I don't want to incur vet bills or leave any visible scars.
Incidentally, I know this is the dog that is doing it, I have seen him in action. The others stand back in awe, but I imagine the wheels are turning in their heads too and they are going to develop a plan of attack soon.

That would be cruelty to animals I would think.A mouse trap for a dog?Get help before you hurt the dog.

I knew an obedience "master" trainer that used the mouse traps on furniture and in garbage cans. The guy also used to wrap a prong collar backwards on the sleeve to help target dogs.
This is your competition dog, no? That's why anything living full-time in the house is a full-time house pet or retiree. Kids are the same as old people. You have to control the dog because there is no way in hell, the kids or elderly are trainable.

LOL I'd do the same thing or possibly set up the "scenario" when your dogs e is on and the remote in your hand. If you go with the mouse trap, ask the guys at the counter for the LEAST affective in actually killing the mice.

Why not just put out a packet of the D-con Rat Pellets. Your problem will be solved. One of em is gonna eat em.

Use it on your fingers first, then decide if it is too strong for your boy. Good idea, but you can get an e collar, or leash with a pinch. Either way you decide to go, try your best to not set him up for falure, and see what you can do about teaching Grandpa some new tricks first.

Uh....aren't those mouse traps thingies supposed to BREAK THE NECK of the mouse??? If it is that strong, I am thinking that it could cause some damage. How about spiking the tidbits with Tabasco or Chinese mustard? That is how I broke Xhango of that habit. Now, he won't take things off even a TV tray table that is a bit below his head or the coffee table, either. This does not work for all dogs, though. The hard-headed, stubborn as hell Teufel-kind bitch apparenlty likes the Tabasco!! The Chinese mustard was not her favorite, but not enough to dissuade her permanently. She just avoids what has Chinese mustard smell. She still steals whatever else she likes off tables, counters, purses...

I heard from someone that using a mouse trap with wax paper over it can be effective. It does not actually snap on the animal; instead it's the noise as a stimulus, which creates the response. However, I have never tried it.

long time ago i used mousetraps to keep a bitch off the furniture when i was gone. i always took the traps apart, unwound at least one of the spring coils, then used the traps (for the noise effect). also kept cats out of large houseplants with the weakened traps. do not use them unmodified!

That's the ticket, you have inspired me, M. I have some nice hot wasabi in the fridge, hehehehehhe.
Yes, this is my competition dog, as I said, many times I keep him in his crate/run but he also does spend time in the house. I think I know who you are talking about DC, I remember some weird shit about mice traps set all over something, I shoulda known better than to think I came up with this idea on my own!!!!!!!
4Pack I absolutely love your avatar.
Thanks Kioanes, if the wasabi doesn't do the trick, I will be sure to fix the trap as you said.
