OOPS
Sorry clicked at the wrong time
I saw this on another site and thought I would see what you thought here.
My deffinition of a litter is 2 or more (plural)? other wise I would say a puppy.
One of my bitches a while ago had a litter of two and the stud owner said that she did not think that 2 pups equalled a litter therefore I would receive a free stud next time.
But some stud owners believe that 1 live puppy consititute a litter.
My dictionary says that a litter is the young brought forth at one birth by any mammal normally having several offspring at one time.
What do you say ?

Why question it? If you like the breeding and want to repeat it or if you have another bitch that you could use just be grateful to have a concisentious breeder that wants to see things done well. Marcia

The man that has the stud dogs for my Lab girls says 2 live pups constitute a litter,
I think that's fair to say, cause what if your female only produces 1 or 2 pups every litter,
I think you have to draw the line somewhere and 2 live pups seems reasonable to me.
One lady that I was thinking of breeding my female to her stud said to me, if your bitch is pregnant
and then reabsorbs the fetus's, she then said> that it would be my bitches fault & she wouldn't give me
another rebreed with the stud, if I'm paying $ 850.00 up front for a stud fee, and I get nothing, even if they are reabsorbed,
with which that has never happened to me, to me that has SCAM! written all over it, I ran as fast as I could from that
stud muffin!!!!! Thank GOD they didn't have a tie.
I myself would not make the person pay me a stud fee until pups are on the ground and the litter needs my
signature to register them
That's just how I do business,
Paula

Pretty mean to refuse a repeat mating if you get nothing!
I think most breeders are pretty reasonable, I had a litter of two once (1 of each & they were huge) and was offered a repeat mating at no charge. That's fair imo.

one live, healthy active puppy or a return to the stud for that or another suitable female for no additional charge (if she did not get pregnant and have at least one live healthy walking barking puppy to show for it) - keep in mind that the dam determines the litter size. If she has one puppy or 10 puppies, she got pregnant and the stud dog did his job. Number of puppies is determined by how many eggs she produces, how many eggs are fertilized (there are at least thousands of sperm fertilizing a small # of eggs) and how many puppies are carried to term by her. The stud only gets her pregnant or he doesn't. If he does, and she absorbs the litter, that is the dam. However the stud owner should guarantee live puppies - at least one IMO to show the stud dog did in fact get her pregnant.

Here's my experience.......Bred my female to a VA male via chilled semen......the semen quality was NOT good.....my repo vet said she had a 50/50 chance of becoming pregnant.....he preformed a trans-cervical.......the stud owner already had my 1,000 dollars...this bitch had a litter of nine puppies the Dec before..this next breeding was in August....hence she only had one long coated female...the stud owner tried to blame it on my bitch.......and said her male did his job...I disagree....had to refresh her mind about the poor quality of his semen.....she then stated that I needed to have my bitches thyroid tested..no problem I can do that......then said she'd give me a repeat breeding but would have to have a puppy from it! I will NOT give her a puppy.....she does not deserve a puppy...she would sell this puppy for 3,000-4,000....I should have a repeat breeding her next season......so will call her when she comes in season..due in the next month...if she sticks to wanting a puppy......I have another male lined up and will let her know what I think.....this is the second time I have used VA studs and the owners are only in it for the $$$$$$$$$$$$ So sad......will keep everyone posted on what happens. What are your thoughts on this??

The same bitch of mine had eight (also huge) to another dog... but she was covered twice (1 day between) and I think the timing was spot on!
I still think it's mean not to allow a repeat mating if you get nothing.

The stud fee for our Lab bitch was 800.00 but if she has less then 6 pups the price goes down. I think thats a reasonable offer. If she doesn't have any pups then there's nothing to pay for.

To me, 2 puppies is a litter. One puppy is a puppy. If the breeding results in one puppy, then you give a rebreed. If that also results in 1 puppy, well, there you have it, 2 puppies from the breedings and everyone is happy.
