Excerpt from link:

  • Make it unlawful, with little exception, for a person to own, harbor, or keep a pit bull dog. "Pit bull" is defined in the act to include Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and any dog that has the physical characteristics that substantially conform to the standards established for those breeds by the American Kennel Club.
  • Force persons in violation of the bill to surrender their dogs to animal control officials, or risk seizure of the animals.
  • Mandate that within ten days of surrender or seizure, the animal control agency shall euthanize such dogs.
  •

Heads up people, this is beyond many other breed bans.

Once there's foot in the door, there's no holding them back. Which breed will be next?

Thanks animules! When I clicked the link and saw Montana I about fell off my chair! I have sent our representative and email. He lives in my town and I have known him personally for many years. What a crock!!  I also have sent a heads up to all Montana residents in my address book.

you ought to put 'alert montana' in topic line to make sure those folks get the message.  this is awful we have an adoable sweet loving little american bully ( a breed developed from crossing pits and am stafs) - he's my husband's hearing dog, well he's just a year and still in training.  it would crush us if he were confiscated and euthanized.  recently a small town sheriff near us shot and killed a pit - a beloved family pet - just because it ran up to greet him when the sheriff approached the house.  this fear is getting crazy like the witch burning.

has anyone read the book "dogs bite" by janis bradley?  http://www.amazon.com/Dogs-Bite-Balloons-Slippers-Dangerous/dp/1888047186/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231300597&sr=8-1 it's a good book to send to anyone who has the power to vote on these issues.

It is ironic, to me, that Montana, of all places, is proposing this extreme step. I used to travel there fairly frequently and was always struck by the ~"live and let live" attitude. The present governor is a very dog-friendly individual, whose only sister is a rottiie-lover and breeder, and a schutzhunder. They grew up on a cattle ranch with working cattle dogs . So, I am even more surprised. Thankfully, she and relatives will be working on him to veto the damn thing. It helps to know people in high places....I hope.

Here's a link to a woman making a movie about the bias against bullies. I wrote the crabby article on the left side. Warning! I was yelling at GSD people!

    Animules,

Thanks for the painful reminder of the mentality and blind ignorance that our country is falling into.  This crap scars me!  I am not a Pitbul fan per say, however to take peoples rights away from owning a breed simply based on it's reputation, (and that reputation of a small percentage of the breed)` seems like racism, only towards dogs.  Were not some people banned because of skin color?  But we have grown so much since those days right?  I do not believe this is an over the top comparison.  It is the same ignorance that allows unreasonable fear, lack of knowledge, and the desire to have complete control over those that you do not agree with.

I am always amazed at mankinds  ignorance.  We like to think of ourselves as bright, educated, reasonable people that make good sound decisions.  Amazing, we have not come very far have we?  As has been mentioned, it will not stop with pits.  Pits will only open the door for any other breed that does not fit into the social acceptance group.  Once you allow this type of legislation any where in the country, under any similar arguments, you have opened a door that cannot be shut.  This is what I detest about many of these types of movements.  People will sit back and say, " oh, I don't care, I don't own a Pitbull, doesn't affect MEEEEE.  We brilliant people will allow this type of crap because we do not have the insight to see down the road two miles and realize it will affect ME.

It is the spirit in which these laws are written.  Ignorance is only a small part of it.  These laws are written for the purpose to deny fundamental rights we have.  These laws open the door for further legislation that denies rights.  I cannot believe I fought for those rights just to see mean spirited, control freak politicians, and empty headed cone head voters follow them like sheep.

Our breed will be coming around the corner.  I could get real nasty on here.  I could say alot of things that would ruffle feathers and offend some.  I do not want to do that though.  I would rather say, "wake up, take the blinders off your head, think a little, and look at our country with your eyes on someone other than just yourself.

Apathy will be our fall in the long run, proove me wrong.  I am going to go now and get on the phone with folks I know in Montana.

    Ex in new mexico

by Ex in new mexico on 07 January 2009 - 06:01

I live on a cul de sac in rural NM. My neighbor has a pit bull that is never in their house, never fenced in - their yard like mine is open and he roams up and down the street.

My then 6 year old daughter and I were walking down the street, returning from feeding another neighbors horses. I had my GSD with me - off the lead, and under total control - walking to heel perfectly. The pit bull charged towards my little girl - I instinctively put myself between this dog and my child and everything happened so fast that I didn't have the opportunity to give my own dog any command. The pit bull lunged for my right hand and I shouted to my daughter to run into the house and she's running as fast as she could. As this is happening my wonderul dog grabbed the pitbull before he had time to lock his jaws - I got away with 5 tiny scars on my hand. The pittbull was literally deposited in his own yard by my dog, who stood guard until I got by our own front door and my daughter. He then looked at me as if to say just give me the word mum...just give me the word... I just wanted him home so I could make sure he wasn't hurt.  I called him home, comforted my daughter, checked my dog was ok and then I cleaned and dressed my wounds.

This pitbull is the sweetest dog WHEN ITS OWNER IS IN THE HOUSE... they do not believe that their dog would attack anyone unprovoked. When they are out their dog becomes an aggressive, territorial male and guards a territory beyond his own yard. When this happened my husband was in Iraq -  he got a trained dog for our protection when he is away in case of an intruder, but I never thought our dog would protect his family with such wonderful instincts. He knew what to do, and he knew the level of force necessary to do the job. I am furious that the pit bulls owners still refuse to have their dog under control - I was too scared to get the police involved as my husband was away and I was afraid they would take revenge on us, our dog or our property... I will never trust their dog but I have to admit that I do not want their dog euthanized. I do not blame the dog - he was doing his job - guarding the packs territory. The dog didn't know that they do not own the street itself.  I blame the owners. They failed to secure their pet when they were not around to supervise it. I'm furious that I should be intimidated by this family but forever grateful to my wonderful, loyal guardian.

I think that responsible pet owners and breeders are the only safeguard against the need for conf & euth measures. I purchased a well bred, highly trained and social dog who has become a loyal and much loved member of our family and I don't have to worry about the liability of a loose cannon in my home or yard... I was apprehensive at buying a 16 month old german import training to become a police dog - but would recommend this to any family looking at the GSD breed, serious about having a well adjusted, reliable family pet.

I am in Montana as well and Robyn Driscoll, the sponsor of this bill is actually my representative.  I have written a letter on behalf of the local AKC kennel club that I am a member of and have offered to sit down and discuss this matter with her.  I encourage individuals to write letters against this legislation, particularly if you are a MT resident.

Don't know what to write?  Here is some info that I wrote for another list:

At this point the dog clubs in the state need to write letters to not only their local house reps and to Robyn Driscoll as well.  People need to individually write letters as well to their local reps.  There are many drafts of letters on the web that one can modify for their own letters.  Here are a few sites:

http://www.rott-n-chatter.com/rottweilers/laws/sampleletters.html   http://jentown.com/stopbsl/letters.htm   http://www.pitbull-chat.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=70   Just google BSL letters and you will find plenty of more sites.  I am the legislative liason for my national breed club and have used a combination of several of these letters as well as my own text in drafting anti-bsl letters.  In your letters don't be confrontive or rude.  Be thorough, be educative, and be someone who they don't put in the "crazy person" file ;-)   I have passed the bill information to the AKC legislative liason group that I am a member of so hopefully they will be able to write some letters as well but this is primarily going to be on us, Montanans, to take care of.  One additional talking point to mention is that Montana's constitution is even more strict to an individual's rights than the U.S. Constitution and that as Montanans, our right to own breeds of our choosing should not be infringed upon.
