An e-friend of mine just got a job with Petco, in Seattle. Their website says they have in-store adoptions from shelters. The website also gives guidelines for the humane treatement of animals. This makes me think that they also sell dogs and cats, and if they do, I'd like to make sure she knows where these animals come from. As we don't have Petco here in Canada, can someone give me the scoop on this company?

My friend has been without a job for awhile, due to the economy. I'd hate to break her heart over this, but I really want her to have the facts about pet stores, and not just be fed the company' s B.S.!

I have never seen cats or dogs sold at Petco. They sell fish for sure.

There are several Petcos near me.  They have regular adoption fairs.

They sell parakeets and finches. Maybe hamsters? They also sell aquarium fish.  There are no sales of dogs or cats.

They are a chain but definitely not the worst.

I take Pharaoh there to do heeling in the aisles.  There is very little there that I use.

Petco does sell small animals...fish, birds, reptiles, pocket pets...

But they don't sell puppies or kittens, Petco does work with shelters and rescues to help adopt pets out, just like Petsmart does.

I wouldn't worry that your friend is working in a store that sells pups and kittens obtained from millers, I doubt any Petco would.

I am a manager at a Petco here in California. We DO NOT sell dogs or cats. Petcos moto is "think adoption first". There are rescue groups that come in, usually on the weekends, for adoption days. We have a computer in the store that has links to local rescue groups. So people can come in and look and fill out applications for adoptions online. We do sell reptiles, birds, fish and small animals. Hope this helps.

Yeah the one close to me in Nashville has dogs most every time I go......but I think they are for adoption. I think I recall only one time here they had dogs for sale. I remember bringing a Husky in the store, and about 10 rats without wings...(really small chiuauas) went crazy barking and making it where no one could hear in the store.  I think they were for sale, but thats the only time I ever recall it.

The one near me has cats /kittens for adoption but they don't sell them. If im not mistaken the local cat rescue boards some cat / kittens there so people can see them but they have to go through the rescue to get the cat or kitten. But they hey sell the small animals (fish, lizzards, birds , mice). And like mentioned before they do hold pet fairs so people can come and see the animals at the shelter.

Petco dose not sell dogs/cats they are pro adoption. Selling dogs or cats would hurt their immage as animal lovers. Their food selection suck though, they should start getting some of the higher quality food.

I agree with the above reponses - PETCO doesn't sell dogs or cats. I stopped in to one of their stores about a week ago and they had four dogs (from a local shelter) there for people to see and hopefully adopt.
