We will get our new GSD puppy at the end of January....we are going to take a few days off to get the puppy used to his new environment. My question is....should I leave him in the fenced in backyard while we are at work or inside the house in the kitchen with baby gates blocking the doorways? My wife and I leave every morning at 7:15 but she gets home at 1:45 every day except Wednesdays where she gets home at 3:30.

Crate him!!!! Back yard? No!!! Kitchen with gates no!!! you might find out that you have no more fance or porch, or kitchen lol :) by a big crate, the dog will be better of plus it will feel safer too :) good luck :)

You should never leave a dog/puppy unattended in the yard! How old is the dog? Were you planning on crate training? A crate would be the safest place to leave the pup.

What is the climate like where you live?

I wanted to put him in a crate...I was just worried if 6 hours was too long to be in a crate...thank you for setting me straight...when he is grown, would it be okay to put him in the backyard...we would of course bring him in as soon as we got home...

Crate. Regardless of what kind of training if any you plan on doing with this pup will be glad you crate trained.

We live in North Carolina....so it can be in the 20's or the 70's in the Winter...60's to upper 90's in Summer.

Either crate him for the 6 hrs. or build a safe kennel in your garage, bedded with wood shavings if you don't mind the dust. Don't forget to remove the collar regardless of whether you crate or kennel!

My dog's stays in a create for 6+ hours since 8 weeks old never a problem, but I have huge crate, and you don't have to worry about the low temperature as much as the high end :)

NEVER EVER leave your dog unattended in the back yard! You are just asking for someone to steal it! He may also become a nuisance, with barking at people or dogs walking by, and running up and down the fence.
Crating in the house is safest.
