 Hi folks

I am seriously considering importing a gsd to the states from Europe.  Hopefully in the next month or so.  Trying to fine tune my entire budget and would like to hear from anyone who has imported recently so I know what i can put into the dog and how much to save back for the logistics.

   Thanks in advance.

Shipping is probably as much as a good dog.

And the exchange rate is not good either.

Exchange rate is better than in last 6 months :) I would wait after holidays, or after new president moves to the white house :) you might save few $

4 Months ago cost me $600USD to import from Hungary. Went through Gradlyn Kennels. Customs cost about $30USD. I felt it was well worth it. Keep in mind this was for a 9 week old pup. Shipping for a 75lb adult was running about $900USD when I priced it out.Good Luck and be careful with a purchase overseas.

 Thanks Pattycakes

I am being pretty careful-it aint my first rodeo lol.  (Love the PM's I'm getting now-lol-hilarious!  They must think I fell off a turnip truck) I have checked with the airlines looks like right now shipping a 100 pound dog from Europe is running right around 500 bucks, thought I'd share that in case anyone else out there is also wondering.  I think that's extremely reasonable.

Puppy pricing for a decent and reputable German kennel can be anywhere from $500-800+ Euro (you will have to check a conversion chart often because the price of the Euro versus the American dollar fluctuates daily). Shipping for a 9wk old puppy was around $300 Euro.
Do watch Customs-they're the ones you have to deal with before you can get your puppy from an outside country into the US. They're in the general airport location where you have an imported puppy shipped to. Some days they can be nice. Others, very nasty. They can decide whether or not you have to pay a 3rd party broker in order to get your dog/puppy. They will usually ask if the dog is for eventual breeding or sale, or just a pet. If you say no, its not for resale or breeding and they pull something up online in a search of you that shows you a breeder, seller, etc (past or present-even if it has nothing to do with the puppy), you're in for major problems. Customs brokers can cost anywhere from $20-$300+-that, also, depends on how they feel that day. I think such is a bit of a scam, but it can still be an issue in of itself.
Also keep in mind, import puppies don't usually come with much if any guarantees for anything.

Prices, currency fluctuations and custom issues mentioned by others are a good starting point yours might be more or less depending on route, destination, airline etc., also don't forget the crate cost, your dog will need one, mine were 190 euros each for large gsd. The best way to figure out a price is to call the airlines and discuss with the seller, I highly recommend paying the person you purchase the dog from or an agent to handle all arrangements and pay them a fee it will go a lot smoother "PROVIDING YOU ARE BUYING FROM A REPUTABLE SOURCE, OR HAVE AN HONEST AGENT AND THEY ARE EXPERIENCED SHIPPING OVERSEAS".

 Hey,

Forgot to mention one important item, your dog will require all necessary shots and you will have to prove by submitting proper documentation ie: pet passport signed by vet for customs officials or they might quarantine your dog upon entry if all is not in order or to their liking.
