What would you say is the hardest thing to teach your dog in schutzhund.?? In your training do you cover protection more than tracking and obedience? Or about the same. I like tracking the most.

For me tracking is the hardest because, I HATE it and I am no good at it. Probably because I hate it. So I tend to  have the most problems in tracking.

I think one of the most technical exercises to teach is the retrieves but I actually enjoy training the retieves as long as the dog has high drive.

Never done Sch but I used to do WT & I found tracking the easiest.  Once they'd been shown how to "get their nose down", I never looked back... maybe I was just lucky.  I know I had one very special bitch in Gabi, she'd have tracked all day every day on any surface and in any weather... never put a paw wrong!

I think OB  specifically the dumbbells has got to be the most difficult part, alot of fine tuning going on forever- all of the points to loose.

We work the dog according to its need at the time. Right now I am working my young dog on holding the dumbbell. I do this 3-4 times a day for a few minutes at a time. I will work different parts like this for the next week or so and then when I feel it is solid I will chain it with picking up and so forth. Eventually in the next 3-4 weeks the retrieve over the flat should be taught well enough. At the same time I am working on the front half of the finish. I have been doing this for a couple of weeks adding distance and accuracy. Still a few days a week we are working on keeping the basics fresh and straight.

I would say OB definately is more time invloved. Each fo the phases is based on OB so to me it is the most important. Any time spent on OB training should carry over to the other phases and be beneficial to your over all impression or score if you are a decent trainer and have a nice strong dog.

Definitely a fast, animated CORRECT retrieve over the 39" hurdle, no mouthing.  I LOVE tracking. I do NOT love teaching the retreive over the 39" hurdle. So many things to go wrong and eat points for...

Tracking for me as well, because it is not my favorite phase.   Though I'm starting to enjoy it more.

Dumbells as well.  As someone else said that's almost half of the points available in the obedience phase (40)...

Tracking was always easy, and I like it..but the retrieves and obedience is far more the hardest to get down perfect and EXACT.
