can anyone give me some advice on my 6mth old gsd puppy, we have had him since 8 weeks and he has and always had a perfect scissor bite, however when he went to the vets last week the vet mentioned that his lower left canine is out of alignment. the tooth is heading twds his upper gum instead of slotting neatly in front of his upper canine when he mouth is closed, the vet has mentioned referring him to a specialist doggy dentist and different options etc. our pup who is 6 mths old today so "happy half year loki" is eating, playing, and behaving as mad as ever as pups do and is certainly not in any pain and is happy for you to look into his mouth.

is this likely to correct itself as it would appear his canine only has to move a fraction to be in the correct position. he has bones and rawhide chews to assist this. my concern is mainly that he will have to have this tooth removed and will this affect his future schutzhund training.

many thanks

I think the chances are that his bite will correct itself within a month or so, and I would not be in a hurry to get any dental treatment done yet, as he seems OK. I had this happen with three puppies from the same litter, they all turned out fine. In the event of having to remove the tooth, I don't think this would affect his schutzhund training for more than a few days while the gum heals.

I can't address you dogs dental issue, as I am new to this breed with my own 6 month old boy.
However, you might want to reconsider what you're giving him to chew. Personally, I wouldn't be giving him any rawhide.   I provide mine with large raw meaty bones, 2 or three new bones each week. His teeth look great so far, and I don't have to worry about what China, or whomever, might be using to process the rawhide. For about $8, I can buy enough meaty bones from my local butcher to last him 3 to 4 weeks.   Good luck.

Look through the messageboard and search for overbite. Alot said already in regards to this.
