Besides training your GSD (and other working breeds like Pit Bulls, Dobies and Rotties) for protection work for police officers, what would be the legal ramifications if a civilian trainer or owner of a protection dog was attacked, say while walking in a park (public property), and used their dog to defend themselves against the aggressor? Would charges be leveled against the dog owner for "letting his dog off leash to attack someone", or could it be used as a "right to defend" case? The worst injury the attacker would have would be a mangled arm.
Would having a concealed weapons permit work in favor of the dog owner in a trial?
I'm sure things would be dealt with differently if the person was attacked on their own property, and sicced their dog on the aggressor. But I'm curious to know about public places, and what the ramifications are.
I know laws vary state by state, not to mention by country, but for those who are versed in the laws, could you please satisfy my curiosity? I think it's pertinent information to know, especially if someone's dog is trained in police/Schutzhund work.
Thank you.

Depends on the prosecutor and extent of ijnuries
Advice...dont get a dog to fight your battles.
Man up and arm yourself with pepper spray or a Glock or Sig.
Avoid hassles, walk away, but defend your life at all costs when it comes to it. Deadly force means that. Your life was in jeopardy.
Self defense- common sense says a dog defended its owners safety. But force has to be justifiable. You can decide whether to stay and report or get out of dodge.
America has grown sick, weal, pathetic and apathetic. A gunman takes over a college campus at VT College and people hide under desks, while cops wait it out for hours rather than confronting the gunman.
Titanic is the course we are on..hope that helps

First off you really nead to know what your local and state laws are.
Second, you need to understand that this would all go to court so best lawyer rules apply.
Third you may be right and still lose a court case.
Same with a firearm, you better be right, and you better be ready and able to prove it in court.
Proof !!!

Simple, if you are being attacked, you have every right to defend yourself by whatever means available to you, including a trained dog. You cannot exert too much-for instance if you pull a gun and the attacker runs, you can't shoot him anyway or if you wound him, walk up and kill him while he is on the ground.
You can use your dog for protection if attacked. Just make sure you can stop him as soon as the situation is safe for you or you can stop him if attacker flees as soon as the dog is released.

In my obsevation home invasions are up, let's face it crime is up and wouldn't get better anytime soon. The criminals pick houses that don't have dogs and minimal lighting. I'm not saying this is exactly what you are asking about.
And yes the laws are different everywhere, but I deal with alot of people who are/have been stacked, robbed, or worst.
The invasions where people are beat up by 2-3 people and they carry off a minimal of stuff is a large issue here, and growing.

I was also thinking that a good thing about siccing your protection dog on an attacker, the dog would be able to keep him pinned to the ground so you could restrain him and call the police to the scene with less risk to yourself. Less chance of him getting away to commit another crime.

My advice......
1) Make sure it is an actual attack. Don't use the dog just cuz you are scared.
2) If possible keep hold of the leash
3) Be ready to be able to justify you use of force. (e.g. was this person much larger than you. have a weapon?, were you in an isolated place with nobody around to help you, appear intoxicated, etc)
Form a criminal standpoint you sould be OK if you can justify why you did it. But you will probably be sued in civil court.

So basically the same requirements that have to be met when using a weapon for defense. Force met with equal force, or life is threatened. That's what I was thinking, but it's good to have other opinions!

If you want a dog for Real Life, you best get a dog from Working Lines and Train in Real Life. Its a loaded gun in a sense.
How would your dog react to this guy trying to harm you?..

HAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!
He would look at your dog and say "OOHH DAAAMMMNN!! That dog is scary YO!!" Then walk the other way!
I know.... Its happened to me. LOL
I dont think they were intending to harm me, but I laugh to my self and keep walking.
