Hello All,

I am interessted in hearing some opinions of these x-ray foto's. Bitch is just turned 12months old and i am interessted in buying her but she lives in another country so i cant have the foto's redone until she is here with me. The current owner says that the elbows and hips are good.
I have sent them off to my vet and await his reply but till then thought i could ask some knowledgeble people around here.

thanks in advance!

Don't know much about elbows,

but, those are nice clear pics, I'd say that the hips are good to excellent, very tight fitting into sockets.

Hips look fine.  Elbows are not positioned correctly, they should be more flexed (flexed all the way).  But even if they were positioned correctly, I wouldn't know what to say about them, can't read elbows.

elbows normal, though not completely developed due to young age.  hips A.  very nice for one this young.

good luck, stephanie, if you decide to buy her.  looks like a nice, solid dog from these films.

As mentioned above correctly the elbows need to be much flexed ,the elbows look perfect to me at present the anconeal process is not united but thats because of the age of the female,The dog must be 2 years old fopr correct evaluation of elbows. The hips are fantastic a1 in germany and excellent for OFA.The elbows would be normal for this dog.Regards.

Those are kick ass hips, I think you will have hard time finding any one that would rate those hips less than good, elbos I have no idea how to read those but they look fine to me.

You probably have come across this website already, but just in case you haven't. It shows the different hip displasia grades with diagrams. You can find a diagram similar to Foto's x-ray.

It is highly recommended that you wait for your veterinarian to read the x-rays.  Many times x-rays even by veterianarins are read incorrectly.  We always have a highly experienced and/or Board Certified Radiologist read our x-rays.  Here are some frightening examples of errors:   (1)  I had a wonderful dog in training. Our client requested that I take the dog for his OFA x-rays while he was still in training. He decided upon a local vet. The local vet read his hips as normal.  When he received his readings from the OFA back the owner was devastated - the dog was dysplastic.   (2)  An owner gave her dog away because her vet x-rayed the dog and unknowlegably told her that her dog was dysplastic.  Her new owner took her to Dr. Keith Taylor in Rockwall who is very knowlegable.  The x-rays were sent to the OFA.  The female is OFA certified Hips EXCELLENT!  (Only about 2 % of GSDs whose x-rays are submitted to the OFA come back excellent.)  This dog now has been bred to the top working dog in the country. Can you guess her pups are going to sell for?  The original owner lost very valuable dog because of wrong choice of vets!   There have been many instances of unqualified vets misreading normal dogs as dysplastic and dysplastic dogs as normal.   This is especially important when you are considering purchase.  If you have a prelim you want to know that you know that you know.  Hope this helps some folks.   You can always e-mail x-rays.   In the Houston Area: Dr. Charlie B. Quick, D.V.M., M.S., Diplomat ACVR 1515 Lake Point Parkway Sugar Land, TX 77478 281-491-7800   In the Dallas Area: Dr. Keith Taylor, D.V.M. Rockwall County Veterinary Clinic 2897 State Hwy 66 Rockwall, TX 75087 972-722-9422   PS  In addition to hips and elbows,  Dr Quick will also do cardiac, thyroid, and patella (knee) OFA certification.  More information at The Orthopedic Foundation For Animals:  http://www.offa.org   PS  I would make sure that there is a clear ID - tattoo number/microchip number on x-rays.
