This was sent to me today - I know some here feed this so I wanted to pass on... Sorry I don't have more info about it but I thought this was enough.

Solid Gold Voluntary Recall - Turkey, Ocean Fish, Carrot, & Sweet Potatoes Formula.  Although this recall is not posted on the Sold Gold Website, it has been confirmed by Solid Gold Pet Foods.  It is only a small recall, only relating to one product sold in a few states.

Turkey, Ocean Fish, Carrot, & Sweet Potatoes Formula Canned Dog Food 13.2 oz Cans – POP-TOP CANS ONLY WITH A 'USE BY DATE 01/02/2010' located on the bottom of can

A limited production of this Turkey canned food was made with the POP-TOP,
and none of the product was distributed in any of the following states:
Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Hawaii, or Alaska.

Solid Gold has received several complaints regarding mold found in a batch
of 13.2 oz canned Turkey , Ocean Fish, Carrot, & Sweet Potatoes Formula, with Pop-Tops. As a precautionary measure, they ask that you return any of this product with the 'Use By Date 01/02/2010'; you will find these numbers on the bottom of the cans.

* 13.2 oz Turkey and Ocean Fish Canned Dog Food.
* Purple label with a POP –TOP (Pull top) only..
* Date on bottom of can 01/02/2010
* Turkey and Ocean Fish cans without a Pop-Top are not affected.

I spoke to Solid Gold, they feel the mold issue is due to tiny microscopic holes in some of the pop top lids; allowing air into the can and thus causing a food borne mold.  Solid Gold told me this is not an ingredient recall, it only is related to one small batch of food.

Oh great. I just switched over to Solid Gold. Although I am using kibble, I will be suspect over the entire line.

Don't worry too much Gator.  I've been using this brand for years and they are control freaks.  Nothing is outsourced and the people at the company are real and easy to reach and talk to.  The owner keeps a watchful eye on everything.  She is a breeder of Great Danes.  I have come to trust the company, but, of course, I used to trust Science Diet and Iams, and look at what crap they are now.  I figure once the company sells out to a large corporate name, we can forget it.  But, so far, Solid Gold is a small company with a lot of care going in to the products.

For what it's worth, Sharon

sharon, they don't have their own manufacturing plant last I heard.  So, how is nothing outsourced?  Their kibble is manufactured for them by another company.  There are only about 1/2 dozen manufacturing plants of kibble in the US besides the major brands.  These companies private label for everyone else including solid gold.

My experience with Hundeflocken by solid gold was not so great, although it was years ago.  After meeting the owner at Pet industry tradeshows and trying the food I would never use it again.

Jim

The only company that I am aware of that does not outsource or send for packaging is Eagle Pack the Holistic line.

If I am wrong, please correct me,  I looked into this durring the wheat scare, things do change. it is one of the reasons I feed it.

Well, it is trial and error unfortunately with dog foods.  But I have had experience with Solid Gold that keeps me with them.  I don't think the Hundenflocken is their best product, but the lamb is quite good, coming in from New Zealand for quality sake.  As far as outsourcing, I meant their food products.  They are all grown in the United States (except the Lamb and the cat's tuna, which is caught off of Thailand because of less toxicity, and also canned there because of freshness issues; still owned by an American Company.

They have only had one other recall....on their Tiny Tot treat ...and that was because of a mold issue in packaging, not because any of their food product was tainted.  That is also the case here....they had a new can manufacturer and they scored the pop top too deeply, allowing mold to get a hold of the food.  As soon as it was discovered it was shut down.

They do have a different company package and make their recipes.  But they create their own foods and oversee the process carfully.

Eagle Pack Holistics first ingredient is Chicken Meal.....that doesn't speak very highly of the product.
