i was at petco buying a new toy for ben. i asked one of the employees how i could make my dogs coat shine more. she told me that i could ad some vegetable oil to his coat and that should make it shine. i went and bought some vegetable oil and then i applied some to his coat and brushed it through.
his hair IS shiney... but it is kind of becoming spiked as he moves around. im not sure if i used too much or what.
i need to know if any of you have successfully tried this.
also, the oil repels water, so i cant dilute the oil that is on him already, im hopeing it will just kind of come off on the carpet or as his hair sheds.
i do not like the overall effect, and he is liking it because i guess he likes the taste.
plus now when i pet him... my hands get oily.
i looked online after i did this... apparently giving the oil in their FOOD is what is suppossed to help their coats.
my main concern is... can harm come to my dog because of this? i dont think it will hurt his skin.

give him a bath with dawn dish soap. It's safe and will delute the oil..they use dawn all the time in oil spills with wildlife..

im worried about the soap because he just had a shampoo like a month ago... when i made my firsst post here. i dont want to irritate his skin

SORRY I know it is not your fault but it is funny when you read it. I only got to the part where you said you brushed it in his coat and fell out laughing. After all these people are only trained for a few weeks and then become "dog trainers" or better yet "advise givers". it is the customers that pay the price.
You might want to take him out side more for potty breaks as he will have loss stools
AND what ever you do DON"T let him around the deep fryer LOL ROTFLMAO

Nope should be fine ,better then a greasy dog,and it's not good to coat the skin with oil .it needs air to be healthy.I would have thought the same thing put it on there hair.older and wiser now..well wait and see some old timers may know more then me.. good luck .live and learn..petco ya think thay could get it right.thats what they get paid for..

i am kind of laughing also... i mean... i really should not be left to my own devices when i am running on little or no sleep.
i will definitly keep him away from the deep fryer.
thank you wuzzup, if nobody disagrees with you after a while, i may just try it.
in fact, if it works, i will stop buying expensive human shampoo and switch over to dish soap completly.
have you seen how much ONE DROP of dawn foams up? if ONE DROP can clean a sink full of dishes... imagin how many times i can shampoo my hair with ONE DROP.

It is fine to bathe your dog once a week! I wouldn't use the dawn every time I bathed my dog but once is fine to get the oil out.

Gretch,
I read this and laughed really hard, hoping you were only joking. In case you are not joking, use Johnsons' Baby Shampoo now and anytime you bathe the dog. I personally would not bathe the dog weekly as some suggest above as it is hard on their coat and will eventually lead to dry skin or worse, change the pH of the skin surface too often. For what it is worth, unless the dog gets into something really smelly or otherwise bad, I don't bathe a dog but perhaps once or twice a year, at most. No need, in any case, to buy expensive shampoos that are more about marketing than anything else. Dawn and products like it are not things one should be bathing in routinely, and I would not use it either on a dog if something else works just as well.
EK, so funny about the deep fryer.......good way to start a fire too. A little oil in the diet, such a Crisco or something like it, rarely and in very small amount, by the way Gretch, would likely not hurt the dog.
Good luck and don't let common sense fail you, and definitely don't always listen to everything you read here.

no... sadly i am not jokeing.
it is like he has his hackles raised 100% of the time now.
he doesnt seem to mind though.
thank you for the input.
i do see the humor in all of this so do not feel bad about laughing.
he was a year old in july and he just finally got up enough strength to WIN a tug of war with me. first time he ever did was tonight. he took his toy and after a few pulls he just pulled that much harder than i was able to and he got it right out of my hand. i am proud of him. he is showing real improvement in his strength and willingness to take tug with me.
before i think he was worried about challenging his alpha in the tug of war.
tonight he pulled and pulled and i couldnt do anything but let it slip from my fingers.
i always win.
i was surprised.
maybe it was the oil... the shiny coat gave him more confidence.

I hope he sleeps indoors, because having his coat covered in oil will prevent his coat from insulating him against the cold.
Petco should be bathing him for you LOL.
