i have heard of ball drive and prey drive... and i know they are something people look at, and they have something to do with how the dog acts and how to train the dog... maybe. other than that i am not sure.

could someone please briefly outline for me the different possible drives in a dog, and give a short explaination of each, and then how to measure the levels of each one in a given dog.

this would be very much appreciated. thank you.

it is much easier to get my dog to do what i want when i am holding a tennis ball than it is otherwise. does this mean he is ball driven?

if he acted the same way when i had food to offer, would that be prey drive?

your last question would be food drive, the rest really can't be answered, everyone has a differing opinion on drive and names of drives or even how much a dog has.

There is prey drive, prey aggression, Civil (reactive aggression), social aggression, and pack instinct/drive.

If you really want to get a good handle on drives, I think Helmut Raiser's little book, "Der Schutzhund" (The Protection Dog, translation by Armin Winkler) explains drives in a way that is easy to understand.  While the book is about protection work, obviously what he says about drives is applicable towards every aspect of dog training.  You can read an excerpt from his book in the above link provided by dAWgESOME.  If you want to buy this little gem of a book, you can find it here:  http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=dgt222, although I'm sure if you shop around on the net,  you can find it other places as well.
