Charlie our 7 year old female had PF about 2 1/2 years ago. She had her anal glands removed and was put on cyclosporin for approx 8 months. She has never had a re-occurance of fistulas but has has ALWAYS had bouts of loose stools before and after PF even though we put her on a fish/sweet potatoe food since having PF
About a month ago we noticed birds eating her stool and thought that was odd....we thought that she must not be digesting her food properly. We took her to the vet around that time for her yearly exam and mentioned it to the vet. We had also had noticed she was hungier and drinking more water but we had recently switched her brand of food and thought she maybe just liked it more than her old food (she wasn't a big eater). The vet figured the new food had less calories/protein making her more hungry. Since then she has developed text book type symptoms for EPI. She has a girgling stomach, very gassy, cow patty stools, extemely hungry, thirsty and is losing weight. We had her tested for EPI, thryroid, diabetes, etc. Everything came back normal including her tli levels but they were low normal.....it was 5.1 and normal is 5-35. I've read to be diagnozed with EPI the tli would be less than 2.5 µg/L but that 3.5 to 5 could be PAA which could ultimately "lead" to EPI. Our vet wants us to go for an ultrasound looking for something else but everything points to EPI. I'm wondering if she just hasn't progressed to that stage in the disease yet so was wondering if anyone who is familar with this disease could give me some insight.
We requested the enyzmes in the meantime and will see how she does...she's dropped 6 lbs in less than a month and we are worried about her
