On a great many kennel websites you find something like this:

"If we don't have what you're looking for, contact us because we have many contacts in Germany and can help you find the dog you want."

On one site, the person specifies that they perform that service at no cost. Of course I expect that she is the exception?

Does anybody have experience in a situation like this? And how would you compensate the person that looked, but didn't find the right dog. I'm quite happy to compensate somebody for their time, but would like some idea of how these transactions work.

Me personally, if tis a friend or a friend of a friend I never charge them but I do it at my covience and they need to understand that. Others / Strangers we don't charge them a fee either up front but ask for a nice discount on off spring or stud - fees. If a female we ask that we get the first phone call if she does go up for sale and then go from there.

It varies from situation to situation and there's no set fee or accepted protocol. The first question should be can this person get you what you want? Have they done it before and do they have a track record. If the answer is; yes. Then you should work out whatever agreement you are comfortale with.

There's a couple hundred variables to a transaction. Make sure you're covered so we don't read about it here 3 months from now.
