I run a small GSD rescue in PA and we are attempting to pull a long-coat male GSD long-coat from Tri-County Animal Shelter. I am wondering if anyone on this board is near this facility, we really need another evaluation done on this boy. The shelter did their own version of a temp test he failed everything! When I asked more details about methods they used I really think he sounds like a normal GSD. We do get this often with shelters, typical GSD behaviors are called aggression and thats that. So I would love to hear if any of the members on this board are close to this facility and would mind going over and taking him for a walk and just seeing what your thoughts are on him. He is 2yrs neutered male, they said VERY dog aggressive though when put with a female did fine with her also they said he would bite if handled too roughly, what they did was to pull on his tail when he wasn't looking he turned his head around quickly BUT did not try to bite again the worker said he failed since he turned around quickly. He did not snap or growl at all personally I think they are afraid of him! The shelters address is Tri-County Animal Shelter 6707 Animal Shelter Road Hughsville, MD 20637 the phone number is 301-932-1713 if further directions are needed. I do not want to give the workers a hard time they have enough on their minds BUT I think this boy deserves a proper eval. If anyone can help please let me know at muttlover25@yahoo.com We are currently trying to find some help with other rescue contacts that might be close BUT I thought we might get lucky and get a member of this board to check him out. You can see pictures of him on Tri-County's website, I'll try to post it on here as well.
Thanks so much,
Amy

If what you are describing of their "testing" is true - these people are clueless idiots doing more harm than good. I hope somebody knowledgeable who is nearby can go by and PROPERLY evaluate the dog, pass or fail. It'd be a tremendous favor if he/she educated a bit those that did the so-called tests.

Idiots! They say he's a GSD mix. They probably don't even know a purebred GSD can be a long coat! He looks purebred to me!

Unfortunately the shelters do have some issues with knowing pure bred animals, I asked why he was listed as mix and they said even if the owners say purebred they still post it as a mix?? Not sure why since they might get some more interest in the dogs. Also they have a dog listed on their site as a hushy/aussie mix looks like a pure bred Border Collie to me I forwarded his picture/info to rescue hoping they would pull him too.
About a year ago I got a call from a shelter in NJ that had a pure bred Long-coat GSD they thought she was a mix 4-5yrs old and aggressive with people. When we went to see her they were very hesitant to bring her out saying she was a nasty dog etc told them I would go back and look at her myself, well she was jumping and barking all over in the kennel but not once did she hard stare or look at me in an aggressive way. She had a leash on her for 2 weeks! No one wanted to go in and take it off of her. She was a sweet girl and stunning we ended up keeping her do to her high energy level. She is now showing in AKC obedience/rally and agility. It really is a shame most of these dogs with "issues" really need proper time and training and they are fine.

I had to laugh that they post all their Domestic Shorthair cats as DSH mixes! DUH! There is no such thing! (WIsh I lived closer...that male cat named Cinnibar is gorgeous, and I've always wanted an orange cat!)

While he's there perhaps he could stand behind a shelter worker and all of a sudden pull their hair or perhaps poke them in the back with a stick. I suspect they would turn around awfully fast. ARRGH the ignorance. Better yet bring a brick and hit them in the head with it and see if that promotes any common sense.
Re the mix thing I suspect it's protection from liability several ways - a. from liability to the owner who merely calls the shelter not goes in - you asked for a GSD and to our knowledge all we had was a mix - so so sorry we put your dog to sleep b. protection to suits from the public - you "sold" /placed a dangerous dog breed - not us we live in this magical county that only has mixes - no purebreds. Protection from those looking for a pure bred GSD, Rot, Mali, Pit etc etc etc for nefarious purposes. Problem is they are fooling no one except for the innocent/stupid owner of scenario a.
