Would anyone be so kind as to help me to understand how one can look at a pedigree and determine whether the lines are western show, western working, east etc? I'm very new to all of this and trying to figure it out somewhat....with little success thus far! I'm familiar with SchH (eg I, II, III, FH etc) terminology but that's about as far as it goes.
Thanks in advance!

can take a while. show dogs have a certain look as well as working dogs. the split is pretty easy to tell now a days, unlike 30 years ago.
the easiest way to start , look at the winners of the bszs (showdogs) and compare them to the dogs in the bsp(working line dogs). that will give you an idea of the looks of the two lines. also winners and those that place well will have some of this info listed on their data. working people will add info about LGA, BSP, WUSV, etc , letting people know what big compititions they have participated or won. showline will add info about seiger show placing and such.
just a start,
john

A main way to distinguish can be the established quality kennel names represented in the pedigree you're looking at. For example (the lists would be too extensive for me to sit here and write out, and some kennels have done a few combo-breedings here and there, and this is just a general summary of what you see in typical pedigrees):
West German Show lines: Arminius, Batu, Farbenspiel, Kirschental, Agrigento, Bullinger(Canadian), Wienerau, Wildsteiger Land, Hirschel, Bad-Boll, and so forth. Usually have VA or V-ratings and SchH3 titles for males, Schh1 for females (occassional FH and/or IP). Lots of KKL1A ratings, too.
West German Working Lines:(alot of working line pedigrees will combine DDR with WGR working, or Czech with DDR, and so forth): Gries, Zeuterner Himmelreich, Kleinen Pfahl, Berglein, Braunsweiger Wappen, Trogenbach, Itzal, and lots more. (More SG,G, or no conformation rating at all, and more SchH3 FH IP3 multi-working titles seen, etc). Some have KKL2A breed surveys, too.
East German(also called DDR): Ritterberg, Rolandsteich, haus Himpel, FelsenschloB, Grafental, Rundeck, Flamings-Sand, Gleisdreieck, and plenty more. Seems like alot of DDR lines maintain a decent V conformation rating along with their stronger, independent drive.
Czech(often combined with strong DDR lines)Kennel Names: Na-Vla, Ben-Ju, Pohranicni Straze, Policia, Ku-Jan, Pek-Kar, Vlad-Ku, and so forth (not my personal forte). Often have VK working titles instead of SchH; not many conformation ratings.
Keep in mind, I'm not so up-to-par on working lines as I am show lines. All serve their purpose and are important!

Thank you both - your feedback has been very helpful. It's very interesting once you start really examining it all. I've been reviewing my one girl's pedigree info on here (I do know that she is from working lines) but I've been trying to educate myself better about her lineage to gain some more insight into her overall - it's been like trying to read greek for me but it's so fascinating nevertheless!
Thanks again :)
