I am getting a 8 wk old puppy this weekend, i was wondering if there was anyone who could point me in the right direction. I am almost done with my paramedic class and am looking to get into SAR work on the side. I have heard of "imprinting" your puppy but not sure what that is. Would just like a little direction.....I already have a 2yr old male DDR, and the puppy is west working with a great pedigree.

There were some people that used to be on Judy's DDR forum that were involved in SAR, if one of them could pm me or email me.

I would recommend starting the basics with your new pup. Work on getting the puppy onto every type of surface you can, have him go under things like tarps etc build his confidence and drive for the toy. We use a ball on String as their reward but alot of people in our group use a jute tug. You can also start doing small runaways, have a person hold him say his name and show the toy as you run away from him. Most times you just go a short distance until they get the game, then try "hiding" behind a tree etc DON'T let your puppy get confused or frustrated you want the game to be fun.  There are a ton of books out there and definately join a local group!
Good luck and enjoy your new pup!
