Next time he has to shut up for 5 seconds before he gets out.
Time after that he has to shut up for 10 seconds before he gets out.
ETC ETC ETC
Eventually he'll figure out that the shutting up is what gets him released.

We fed our puppy in his crate. When he was done eating, we'd let him out. More and more, we'd increase the time we would let him out after eating in his crate. When he was not eating in his crate, we put his bed back in there and his "crate toy" (only allowed to have when in his crate.) We would leave the crate door open for him to explore on his own. It got to the point at 10 weeks that he would wander into his "house" and lay down, chewing on his "crate toy." While he was in there, we would close the door, starting off doing it for short periods of time, and then extending it. He would cry a little at first, but as someone else said, the minute he stopped and laid down, we let him out and praised him.
We now have an 11 months old German Shepherd whose "house" you can tap on the top O call out, "HOUSE!" and no matter what room he's in, and he'll go running into it and lay down. We never had any crate issues by doing the above with him.

I would let them out about an hour after feeding and straight outside to the restroom saying "go potty". Once they did their business and even during I would praise. Now they all go rather quickly when they are told "go potty", even the 12 week old.
I also did not let them out when they cried. Only when they were calm. They pick up rather quickly on how to get what they want and in return get what you want. Quite.
My older female will go right into her kennel and not come out unless she is told to when her kennel door is open. My older male goes in when told to and won't move until told to.
You just have to make the kennel their sanctuary. Its the most happy place for them to be and the only place that is theirs.
